To answer your question Papaya, the travel insurance I mention can be claimed while in Malaysia. It is a long term medical suitable for expat but it appears expensive compared to the Allianze one you mentioned

The agent that folks dealt with for Ringgit Net was richard_ohh@yahoo.com.sg and I know that there several applicable health insurance options from AIG. I suggest that you email Richard and see what is on offer.

Just got an email in from your Richard Ong this morning, said he could help, and had been away on holiday.  Too late for us (unless anything goes wrong with Allianz), but he's still around if anyone wants to contact.

We've been in Penang for 2 weeks now and we have been busy going round eating different food. Must get down to serious work soon like sorting out our medical insurance. Just checked old post and found Papaya's post about Allianz. So will be contacting Collin Pereira soon

Hi Davita, I've been in touch with georgeshooter previously but, just to confirm, Allianz were very good.  I'm not sure I would describe it as a basic medical insurance but it certainly wasn't the most expensive (mid-range I guess).  I didn't see any threads on here about finding a basic medical insurance in Penang.  Maybe someone could post if they know one, or maybe I've missed a thread.

If you're talking about the MM2H Medical (not insurance) then Rspec posted a good recommendation for the Polyklinic opposite Island Plaza in Tanjung Tokong.  We got stung of course at Adventist  ::) though it was probably time we had full MOTs done.

Sorry....my bad...I was confusing medical with insurance.

For what its worth MM2H accepted my world travel health plan issued by the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC Insurance).
This plan covers all countries, on an annual basis, with the longest out of Province trip of 60 days.
We keep this plan current, notwithstanding the MM2H requirement, as we travel a lot and Canada's Health Service does not adequately cover accidents or hospital visits out of the country.

I was therefore delighted that I didn't need to pay for another insurance that I was unlikely to use, only to justify the MM2H requirement.
If we were planning to live in Malaysia then another local Insurance would be justified.

Thanks Papaya and Davita, I have email Collin at Allianz and now awaits his reply. Will check out medical as suggested by Papaya. But I think insurance will come first and medical near to the time when we go to KL for the social visa. In the meantime, I am looking at FD and see what rates are. Need good rate to compensate poor sterling. I'm holding on for a few more weeks to see if sterling climbs before the big transfer, though I probably need to do in in 3-4 stages. Got RM5.00 a few days ago for  sterling :(

By the way, I got maxis mobile internet. Pretty good package. Upfront of RM150 and free modem. Monthly payment of RM48 less rebate of RM30 for 5 months. 2.5 G download per month. After 5 months, modem is mine to keep and contract.

Well, best of luck with the sterling exchange, george.  Who knows what's going to happen there.  It could get a lot worse according to the papers, but let's hope there's a little upward spike somewhere.  Maybe Darling will announce something nice in the UK budget to cheer the investors  ::) though pigs may fly also.

We had a visit from our mm2h agent tonight and  we have not heard from Collin at Allianz. Our mm2h agent VOSTA HRD in Penang is extremely knowledgeable about the whole process and is a local Penangites with lots of experiences dealing with immigration in his previous employment. Looks like he is going to sort out our medical check-up and will get insurance quotes for us. He recommended CIMB bank at Batu Ferringhi for us to set up our FD

Papaya. Did you get any more useful info from your Agent regarding MM2H Medical Insurance policies? I  have emailed everyone mentioned here including collin.pereira@allianz.com.my and richard_ohh@yahoo.com.sg with no result.
I was hoping that you came across a really basic policy that was available for MM2H.

Many thanks for any help.

Regards

Ken

We got our medical insurance with Allianz in Georgetown (contact details above).  I wouldn't describe it as a basic insurance but was acceptable price to us - they offer various levels of cover.  They did require a Malaysian address so, if you haven't got one, best to borrow one.  We put a future address.  If you are in Penang, you could maybe just pop in there?  Remember to take your MM2H conditional approval letter with you.

All these companies seem to be a little erratic in their service.  I know of one other forum member who contacted my contact at Allianz and got no reply.  I have just contacted them twice by email to get a quote on household items insurance and haven't got any answer from them  ::)   So I guess I shall vote with my feet and go elsewhere.
