Tokyo Marine
« on: August 21, 2010, 10:45:27 AM »
hi,

Received some news from a mate of mine. He's just taken out basic medical insurance in order to meet the mm2h requirements.

He used Tokyo Marine which is based in KL. In fact, he went via an agent in Perak.

As an example, the cost for a 42 year old was about RM300 ++. This included a 50% surcharge, whatever that was.

Payment was made to the agent in Perak, the approval/policy was done in KL, and the documents couriered to my mate's hotel. It took a week.

I have no other details about Tokyo Marine, or the contents of the policy. But I have a pretty happy mate & family all with the mm2h visa in their passports.

BTW, he said that the submission of documents, payment, and visa endorsement at PWTC took 1 hour.

Just in case anyone is searching I believe the company is called TOKIO MARINE. I've seen a billboard in Jakarta.

hi, Davita,

Thanks for that. I've added in the Tokio bit to the subject.

I've googled Tokio Marine and had a look at their website.

Under FAQ it says "who is eligible for medic plus" (I assume that this is the policy my mate took out as it's the cheapest) and the answer is, "Any Malaysian or Permanent Resident of Malaysia aged 19 – 65 and policy is renewable up to the age 70."

So I don't know how this reconciles with my mate being a non-Malaysian. Maybe they include mm2h visa holders as a special addition. Or maybe that's the answer as to what the 50% weightage represents.

Anyway, if anyone has answers please post.

Any MM2H participant can buy the medical insurance so long as he can produce the letter of offer from MM2H. Not all insurance companies offer coverage to participant over 65 years old.  But nevertheless the rejection letter is needed to comply to the terms and conditions of MM2H visa which dictates that a medical insurance is mandatory unless you are no longer insurable.

Since MM2H participants are new to the country and will be living in this region, it is wise to make sure  you are adequately covered.  I wonder how much coverage can you get for a RM 300 medical insurance.  Many just purchase the minimum entry level insurance just to pacify MM2H requirement. But when they are down with a major illness,  they have to dig deep into their savings to cover the excess. What a way to stay a new life in a new country.

Dear all!

Thank you for all the feedback on medical insurance. Can anyone help me here please.

I have contacted ING - their cut off age is 60.  AIA, same story but offered me a package plan called ECP150+MCP150 (Excelcare Plus with Medicover Plus).

I look at the plan for 51-55 for female - RM1,570.50 per year (cheapest of this plan)

Me - 54  - no problem getting a med. cover

Hubby 63 (going on 64)

A friend is getting Prudential to contact me next week.

Do you know of any insurance company that can offer reasonable cover at hubby's age.  (Not keen on cover up to 70 only.)

I would prefer to find medical insurance cover from the same company for both of us.

Any help is truly very appreciated.

Thank you so much.

This was mentioned in a recent previous thread I commented on, Tokyo Marine is a good starting point, however insurance quotes over 65 & everybody runs out the door when you ask, your word "reasonable" means many things to many people it can be quoted but expect to pay US $ 1500 + per year but if one hits a horrible long term bill as one gets older this then becomes reasonable & does not deplete one savings.

Hi Concy,

First yr we used Prudential as there wasn't much choice and it was very expensive, but the fixed premium was for life as long as you pay yrly.
2nd yr we switched to AIA (spouse program). The younger of the two is the main insured till 70 and hubby piggy rides. So the older one gets covered past 70 ie until the younger turns 70. The premiums are for every 5 yrs increment. Last yr renewed for the next 5 yrs and still under Rm4k/yr.(covers both).
There is a life and accident component included. A month ago hubby had an accident that needed suturing. The fees at emergency and followups were all covered.
AIA & Prudential have one that covers up to 100 yrs old but my AIA ins agent said it's not worth it for me to switch now as the premium would be costly.

Dear Rae
Thank you for your comment and you are so right, age above 65, insurance people is just not interested in you.

The word 'reasonable' is at least we can have good doctors with reasonable good hospital, facilities and services.  I noted ypchoon's words 'But when they are down with a major illness,  they have to dig deep into their savings to cover the excess. What a way to stay a new life in a new country.' I agree with ypchoon and would wish to have adequate cover as you never know with health.

Dear BB
Thank you for your feedback and seems like on your Spouse Program with AIA, in our case, I should be able to have this program too but why this agent did not mention it to me.  She gave me only the ECP+MCP plan.  This cover can go from ECP150+MCP150 (RM1,570) - ECP350+MCP350 (RM2,877 per female per year).  I am yet to find out from her the difference of plan but is one that covers right up to 100 but the premiums is astronomical!  I also think this is a single program not spouse.

In fact, I just mentioned your 'spouse program' to my hubby now and he thinks its a good plan suitable for us. I will write to my agent for more info and if she is not so helpful, may I ask if you can give me your agent's name to contact directly.  Thanks BB!

Thank you so much !
