Notary in Penang
« on: September 15, 2011, 03:50:33 PM »
Hi Folks,

I'll be in town next Friday (land around 10:00) and wanted to get my MM2H Application forms and stuff notaried and witnessed. Can anyone recommend a decent notary in Penang and also the likely cost?

I'm staying over at Singai Nibong near the Queensbay Mall, if that helps.

Regards,
Andy

*EDIT - As Atilla quite rightly points out, when I say "next" Friday I mean Friday 23rd September 2011.

Doubtless you will be in Georgetown at some stage?  Come out of HSBC onto Beach Street and walk up Beach Street a few yards to Bishop St.  Walk up to 49 Bishop St, about 75 yds up road on left. Open shop front with  sign saying Commissioner for Oaths.  Duck under the awnings or you may not see it.  RM 4 per document.  She can also print stuff off a USB stick if you need.

Thanks Atilla.

Probably dump my stuff at the apartment in Sungai Nibong and then go straight to the notary. Want to get everything sorted before my trip down to KL on Sunday evening.

Would you believe that several notaries I contacted in London were 'allegedly' restricted by The Notaries Society to a minimum charge of £60 + VAT for an eye watering £72 per document.

If you have a look at my blog, or the thread below you'll see you can can get the SB form done and the medical too:

http://www.my2home.info/index.php/board,33.0.html

There's quite a few COO around that area near Downing St.

Presume by next Friday you mean 21st?  16th is a public holiday so all closed.

@ KOLF.  Thanks for the PM.  I did reply by PM too but not sure if it went??  I often forget to 'Save' a copy in my outbox.  Let me know if you don't get it.  Any problems on the docs front or on the locations of the various offices etc which are not clear from the blog/thread here, feel free to give me a call.

Thanks Atilla. I got your earlier message, no problem.

I've printed out a lot of the content from both the forum and your blog which I'm taking with me on my Friday afternoon run-around Georgetown to complete the paperwork. If I get stuck, I'll give you a call. Just getting twitchy is all. It's all beginning to get a bit 'real'.

 ???

Currently 04:33 here in Germany and can't sleep. Keep going over and over the cover letter, I've rewritten it about 5-times.

Ha ha, I know what you mean about getting a bit real.  The document run should be easy on Friday. Post Office (for SB), then Immigration, then LHDN and done.  All in walking distance.  Notary also a short walk, as is the medical centre.  Like I say, 2 hours tops I should think, and that includes 1 hour plus waiting time if any.  Good luck  O0

It's been over five years since I went through the application process; so things might have changed. However, I will offer this info in case it is still valid, and might help save you some delay. No doubt, if I am wrong, there will be more accurate info incoming from others.
Regarding the Commisioners of Oaths... there a plenty of them in the area around the court building (one for sure opposite the Kwan Yin temple). I had previously used them to get documents notarised for passport renewal. If I remember correctly the charge was RM4 per document.
But when I went to one for the MM2H application, I was told that they were (at that time) no longer permitted to notarise photocopies of passports.
So I went to a government building (the land registry office in Taiping) and asked if there was anyone who could notarise documents, and after a short wait I was accommodated. No charge for the service.
If I hadn't lucked into this alternative, I would have just gone to a solicitor.
Hope this is of some help. I'm guessing though that other board members will offer that they have subsequently had docs notarised by CO's with no problem. If so, then I was just the victim of a misunderstanding.
Not the first time!

hi, KOLF,

There are plenty of Commissioners of Oaths, and loads of solicitors, in Penang who will do the "certified true copy."

Google for details of what's available. That's how I got my solicitor - whoever is closest to where you're going.

The rate of RM4 per document seems to be pretty standard. Try negotiation for the whole passport. I got mine done for RM50. But that was in cheaper Perak. I didn't mention MM2H.

Commissioners for Oaths can certify passport copy pages as a mate of mine has just got it done for a car purchase and that was Ok.

mm2h.gov.my
All copies must be certified TRUE COPIES OF ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS by EMBASSY /HIGH
COMMISSION / SOLICITOR/ JUSTICE OF PEACE / NOTARY PUBLIC / COMMISIONER FOR
OATHS / GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL.

I found the Bishop Street one toot sweet :

Quote
Commissioner For Oaths
29 Bishop Street, Georgetown 10200, Pulau Pinang
p: 0164974662
C&P : sumpahpg.wordpress.com

Try for some others and get a deal, if you're bothered. If you get anywhere good please post.

Just to make it clear to any readers : The Post Office (SB), Hasil embossing (LHDN), and the RB11 Medical bit all come along after you've got the approval.

hi, bazzaman,

That's great that you got the passport copies certified FOC. The Commissioners of Oaths where I am here in Perak work out of the back of second-hand car dealers, hardware or other shops. Cheap at the price.

If I remember correctly several years ago the mm2h.gov.my site just more or less said Notary Public, there wasn't much detail. It got expanded to the above later.

Just a formal update on the Notary / Commissioner for Oaths.

I can heartily recommend the one mentioned previously on Bishop Street. She did all of my notarizations, witnesses, etc (and this was accepted by the MM2H Centre this morning). She has given me some of her cards and seems to understand both the MM2H Visa process and is more than happy for us to come to her for help and assistance. She also guided me through some of the more complex bits such as the which bits to fill in where, etc.

Her full details (from her business card are as follows):

COMMISSIONER FOR OATHS (PESURUHJAYA SUMPAH)
CHAN KAM CHEE
(Retired High Court Judge's Secretary)

29, Bishop Street
10200 Penang
H/P 016-4974662
E-Mail kcchan@lycos.com

I know Scott prefers us not to just regurgitate web links, but to provide real life feedback on how we've dealt with the process and who we've had good (or bad experiences with). I can heartily recommend Chan Kam Chee as having the necessary qualifications, understanding what is needed from an MM2H perspective, being efficient (took 30-minutes max, most of which was me faffing about) and also has a certain sense of homour.

Don't be put off by the offices which open onto the street or look a bit run down, I'm planning on getting her to witness my Malaysian will before I go back.

I cannot recommend her more highly.

What were her charges like ?

I had 10 pages for RM 4 each = RM 40. Quoted cost in London £60 + 20% VAT = £72 per page, therefore £720 for the equivelent.
