Malaysian Post Office
« on: December 20, 2009, 01:39:36 PM »
I've been trying to learn about the Malaysian Post Office.

The Post Office Guide is fulsome, but has me confused on the main issue I want to know about.

On P 17 it refers to POSMEL service of "private letter box".
On P 23 it refers to POSNIAGA service of "private post boxes".
These appear to be different.

In Bkk I have a "post office box" that I access with my own key, and that is what I would want in Penang.  Can anyone clarify?

As Midlands Condo is my intended location, is there a Post Office in/near Midlands One-Stop where a Post Office Box can be rented?

[[The nearest P.O. I have found so far is Belissa Row, but cannot find it on Google Maps; only Belissa Court, and PO Box status unknown.  There is also Komtar, though it's a bus-ride away.  Apparently the General/Head Post Office at Downing Street has full facilities, but obviously that is even further away.]]

Any advice welcomed.

Feebee

Belissa Row is the row of shops, restaurants and offices set back from Burma Road - with the likes of Coffee Bean, Secret Recipe, Astro and CIMB. Belissa Court is behind it. There isn't a post office there but there might be a PO box for posting letters.

The nearest Post Office is in Jalan Cantonment, next to Maybank (between Burma Road and Kelawei Road) - maybe 5 minutes walk from Midlands Condo. It is quite small though and I doubt it has PO boxes.

Posniaga = business mail
Posmel - ordinary mail?

Thanks Bill.  I'll try Cantonment first, with Komtar next.  Komtar is easy enough by bus.

I'm quite interested in PO Boxes too.  Found this page on the POS website.

http://www.pos.com.my/V1/main2.asp?C=/V1/PosMel/POServices/POBox.htm

Looks like it's RM 50 per year plus RM 30 for a key(?)  I've seen them in the Batu Ferringhi Post Office and that Post Office is not a very large one though I'd be more interested in T Tokong or T Bungah area.  I'll take a look around next visit.

It seems to me they're pretty useful if you're going to be changing addresses a couple of times - as in our case, as we'll be renting somewhere first, then into a bought place.  Also useful if you end up in one of those embarrassingly named condos and really can't bring yourself to tell your friends and family.  I think the worst one I ever saw was in Singapore - a condo called Poshville  ::)

This page is much better than the pdf Post Office Guide.  Note that it actually says PO Box rather than the other terms.  It seems a pity you have to apply by post to somewhere else though.  I wonder why the local Post Office can't arrange it?  Perhaps they can but aren't saying.
