How do you get free transfers? I have always been charged GBP10 to transfer to my local HSBC account...although my last transfer was 3 months ago. When I transferred money to an account in another bank the charge was GBP27.

Hi BillJay,

As far as I know transfers from countries Abroad is foc on the assumption that you are transferring Sterling (or whatever foreign currency) from Country A to Country B.
However if you are transferring from one country in one currency to another country in another currency then charges will be applicable.

I am sure the 'enlightened' will appraise us further!!!!!

Hi Martha,

When I have sent money from the UK to Malaysia, I have just said to transfer x Pounds Sterling. It gets converted on arrival in Malaysia - often the same day.

I have checked the FirstDirect (part of HSBC) website and it shows :

Overseas payments
Worldwide and Euro priority payments    £25
EU Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) payments    £9
HSBC group transfers    £10

I haven't effected a transfer recently so these charges may be new!! :(

You need to set up a sterling account with HSBC Sdn Bhd, and then transfer sterling to that account. that puts you in control of when to convert it!

Martha, its good to know that its possible to set up a sterling account with HSBC Sdn Bhd and convert when needed. Any info re-transfers of fund appreciated as we will need to have our FD by end April

There's an old saying, "the enlightened don't use 5 watt bulbs."  :-\  Well it's not all that old, like pre-Edison.

CIMB takes 1 week for cheque books, in the experience of a colleague who recently opened a CIMB account and who has just sms'd me. I guess branches vary so best to +/- a few days.
