Malaysia Public Holidays
« on: December 18, 2009, 10:38:32 PM »
hi,

Today was Awal Muharram and a public holiday. December 25th is the only public holiday over the Christmas period.

Here's a list of public holidays for 2010 :

2010
1 Jan New Year's Day.
1 Feb *Federal Territory Day.
14 Feb Chinese New Year.
26 Feb Mawlid al-Nabi (Birth of Prophet Muhammad).
28 Apr Wesak Day (Birth of Buddha).
1 May Labour Day.
5 Jun King's Birthday.
31 Aug Merdeka Day (National Day).
10 Sep Hari Raya Puasa (End of Ramadan).
5 Nov **Deepavali.
16 Nov -17 Nov Hari Raya Qurban (Feast of the Sacrifice).
7 Dec Awal Muharram (Islamic New Year).
25 Dec Christmas.

Note
*Putrajaya, Kuala Lumpur and Labuan only.
**Except Labuan and Sarawak.

(a) Muslim festivals are timed according to local sightings of various phases of the moon and the dates given above are approximations. During the lunar month of Ramadan that precedes Hari Raya Puasa, Muslims fast during the day and feast at night and normal business patterns may be interrupted. Some restaurants are closed during the day and there may be restrictions on smoking and drinking. Some disruption may continue into Hari Raya Puasa itself and Hari Raja Qurban may last anything from two to 10 days, depending on the region.

(b) Buddhist festivals are also timed according to phases of the moon and variations may occur.

End of List

Of course if you're retired you can have as many private holidays as you like.  And if you post them here you can make them public.  ::)

Thanks Scott
that is very useful.
Could you or someone else post the "normal school terms"? Just out of interest how many weeks annual leave do most working people in Malaysia receive and what are normal office hours? (Is Saturday morning worked like it is in HK and I think in Singapore?)
Cheers
Donohue  :) :) :)

I've got a link for you.  It lists public holidays and school holidays for both Malaysia and Singapore.

hi,

All day Saturday is worked in Malaysia, with government offices getting 1 Sat off per month. I think that it's the first Sat of the month. (?)

Singapore works till 1pm on Sats. That's government. Individual companies vary. Downtown (Shenton Way) in Singapore is quiet Sat PM.

Not sure about annual leave. Most of the businesses that I know about seem to be 6 days a week, 52 weeks, except for Chinese New Year (as long off as can afford) and Hari Raya (2 days off). I guess folks take a week off here and there.

For me opening/closing times have always seemed to depend on the preferences of the business owner, within a wide range of norms, rather than standard universal hours. It's good as there's usually going to be somewhere open at sometime during the day.

The only time it really does go quiet is the first week of Chinese New Year.
