Hi
Having heard about the boat trip to Langkawi from QJumper and Stuurman and the deep lake trip from Corporate Angel I want to hear more about the delightful holiday spots in Malaysia.
Two that I have been tossing up visiting for a few days and would like to hear more about are Pangkor (no not Pangkor Laut) and Cherating. From my reading, Pangkor strikes me as a smaller Langkawi without the big hotel chains. Any thoughts?

Pangkor has been recommended to us so much so we have booked a stay on the island for later in the year.

Tioman and Redang are also recommended by Malaysian friends - apparently they are both good areas for snorkelling - and hope to visit both when we relocate to Malaysia.

I love the Perhentians but haven't been there for age's though. Next year after the rainy season!

The Perhentians are great for a few days off - not much to do apart from relaxing and snorkeling / diving
Redang and Tioman fall in the same category

Pangkor has the advantage of being closer and easier to reach. Pangkor Laut is worth the few additional hundred for the stay if you take the local resident package. Just think to bring your booze with you

How clear is the water in Pangkor?
I found the water in Langkawi even at the famous Tnajung Rhu beach a bit murkey.
A little bit north in Koh Lipe the water is crystal clear and great for snorkeling and diving.

Not very clear as Pangkor is along the Malacca straight.
The beaches are nice and you can swim easily, but don't expect to spot a fish

Depends where you take the ferry

. Think next time I drive up to Kuala Perlis. Or take a plane...

The ferry trip from Lumut jetty to Pangkor island takes about 20 minutes. It's air-con'd which is a pity as the older open double-deckers were more like fishing boats and it turned the trip into an adventure. The new air-con'd ferries are the clapped-out ones from Langkawi.

Pangkor is great. You can rent a motorbike and ride around the island. It takes 1 hour. There's the posh resort at RM200++ per night depending on where the room is located. The beach front is more expensive.

There are two small road-strip fishing villages on the mailand side. Both have plenty of eating places although things close early.

The beaches are good, but (as posted earlier) the seawater is the Malacca Straits greyish stuff. The big advantage of Pangkor island is the peace and quiet. You'll be one of only a few tourists if you avoid the holiday periods. You'll probably have the beach mainly to yourselves.

The island has hiking trails into the "interior jungle" and it's famous for its hornbills.

came across this fascinating site that lists waterfalls in Malaysia. Does anyone have a favourite waterfall. Has anyone visted the falls in Penang?

Another interesting site. I visited the Batu Ferringhi waterfalls in 1979 so there was no problem then with development. The road along Batu Ferringhi beach was a wide single lane and more dirt track than tarmac. Off to the left was a real dirt track that led up the hill and this became just a pathway. It was walking into the jungle. Some time later, long enough to be very hot and tired, we came to the falls, and lazed around on the rocks under a cascade of water.

I haven't visited since so it was interesting to read that the falls are still there somewhere.

During the 1979 visit I was a bit short of cash, and having to make it spin out. I remember walking back to Georgetown from Batu Ferringhi.

Hi Scott,

The falls you refer to are the Chin falls and although the building development has infringed on the access I think you can still get through to the upper falls.

Surpisingly few people venture the short distance past Telok Bahang and beyond where there are still parts of the island that are virtually untouched. There are many waterfalls up there but I think you have to be fairly intrepid to follow them up the hills.

Of course the biggest and most majestic waterfall is at the bottom of my road where water gushes to an incredible height during the rainy season. The source seems to be a perforated water treatment plant
