I will be taking a month long trip to Malaysia in a couple of weeks.  I will be in and around Ipoh March 6 to March 16.  Will there be anyone in Ipoh at that time so we can meet at a kedai and have some white coffee?  I would imagine Scott to be the person nearest to Ipoh since you're in Perak.  I don't have a boat, but I do have several kayaks.  Maybe we can compare notes on the differences between a kayak and a sailboat  :D  Where can I leave my email addresses so in case someone is interested, s/he can contact me?  I also hope to climb/hike Bukit Kledang.  Any tips from those who have hiked the trail?  Thanks in advance for any information.

hi, Hieu,

Thanks for the offer and apologies but I'll be in Singapore from the end of February to the end of March. I guess we'll have to chat about kayaks another time. Best wishes, and have a good time in Ipoh.

You've already gotten 7 posts. All you need is 3 more then with 10 posts folks can PM you rather than use email.  Please post a few more items - weather, food, world economic and property articles   :-X,   anything.

Thanks for the tip Scott.  Now I just have a couple more posts to go : )  Have a good time in Singapore.  As my family is in the U.S.,  I'm scouting it out the possibility of living in both Malaysia and the U.S., i.e. Winter in Malaysia and the other months in the US (and travel).   I was going to take my portable foldable kayak, but figure I should wait until the next trip, after checking out the different locations for kayaking this time.   BTW, what fruits are in season now,  how about jackfruits?

hi,

Fruits in season. I've noticed that the local night market has just started with mangoes (RM10 for 3kg). Fried jackfruit is always available and delicious.

Hello!

I have been instructed by Mrs P to move my talk about Ipoh and Teluk Intan to here  ~44~:

Hello! Mrs P

I know more about Teluk Intan than I do about Ipoh.  :(

Ipoh is/was a mining town especially in the Kinta Valley - known to have the world's largest tin deposit. Many tin magnates came from Ipoh whereas Teluk Intan's claim to fame is the Leaning Clock Tower which the locals called "The Leaning Tower of Pisa / Teluk Intan.    :-[

Ipoh was the city I had to sit for my driving test after I have failed the driving tests x 3 in Teluk Intan and my then driving instructor said I best go elsewhere to sit for the test as the driving examiners had sworn they would not pass my driving test on account of the arguments I had outlined as to why they should not have failed me as I am a competent driver.  ^-^

Was considering hiring Cupert as driver (prior to reading the above !!!!!!!!).

Cheers,

James

Oi! I heard that!  ~9~

Came across this site which may be of interest to you seeing that all the Ipoh MM2H forum members are hibernating somewhere. Perhaps you may strike gold in Ipoh as a place to stay. These guys may be keeping this place a secret so that they can keep this wonderful city to themselves.  O0

[agent's link removed : Admin]

So agent James check Ipoh out and report it back to us!  8-)

Have noted comments re Ipoh are somewhat mixed !

Are there any other interesting "sleep over" points in Perak - offering nice scenary, colonial accommodation, things to do etc ? Will still visit Ipoh but maybe not essential to stay there.

Thanks,

James

Ah Cupert, nice to see you on here  :D  That link looks horribly out of date.  It's an agent's site and it's talking about 5 year visas and that it may change to 10 years in 2006  :-[  Oh dear.

hi,

I've removed the agent's (developers) link in Cupert's post as all agents promotional stuff is on it's own board and subject to certain rules of the site.

Sleep over points. Well there's Taiping which has a zoo and a prison. There's the pleasant, stroll around town of Kuala Kansar. And there's Pangkor Island which means that you need to put your car in one of the car parks and get the ferry over. No need to stay on the island. You can get a trip round the whole place in one of the mini-buses. It takes about 1 hour. Get the mini-bus to stop at the Portugese fort (not really much to see but loads if you use your imagination) and the nearby "rocks" (not much to see full stop). And then get the bus to stop at one of the beaches so you can have a swim.

Ooops! Sorry about the outdated link!   :o :-[

Was in a hurry to rush off to Ajahn Brahm's dharma talk. Just found out that he is not only visiting Sydney but was giving a talk near where I live, so I just had to go.  :)

Hey! where are the Ipoh MM2H members? Are they in hiding? Yoohoo! Yoohoo! Interested expats would like to know more about Ipoh!!!

Some of the places to visit is the Perak Tong.
One of the largest limestone cave temple in Malaysia. Built in 1926 by a Buddhist priest from China, Perak Tong houses over 40 Buddha. Beyond the main altar, a passage leads into the cave's interior. After a steep climb of 385 steps, the cave opens again to reveal a wonderful view of the surrounding countryside.

Was going to recommend the Heritage Hotel, Ipoh but the tripadvisor's reviews were less than encouraging.  :o
Average: 2; Poor: 7; Terrible: 9

Indulgence Living (and restaurant) have much more favourable reviews.

There is the orangutan sanctuary called Bukit Merah and it is between Penang bridge and Taiping http://www.malaysiasite.nl/bukitmeraheng.htm

Worth seeing.

Just make sure there is enough water in the lake.
We drove up there last year only to find the levels where down so the boat could not get to the island where the sanctuary is.

Sleep over points. Well there's Taiping which has a zoo

It would be great during the day but unfortunately we decided to do the night safari and that was a dud as it was just a lap around the zoo on the "train", in the dark, stopping occasionally to look at a dark blob in the distance with commentary on scratchy speakers in  bahasa,  then get out at the end at the shops (or exit for us) and all over in probably 30 minutes

We actually saw more activity (monkeys) in the lovely parklands outside while waiting for the zoo to open but disappointingly, locals did turn up and drop food/rubbish on the ground for the monkeys to rummage through

Oh well :)

Hi James

You may like Maxwell Hill especially if you like walking or hiking. The climate is coolish so it would be a pleasant break from the heat and humidity.

http://www.journeymalaysia.com/MH_maxwell.htm

Not sure if it is accessible by ordinary sedan. May need to hire a four wheel drive.

Well, Maxwell Hill or BUkit Larut, is no more as cool as before .Most probably due to Global warming! I went there last year april for a day trip. went up by the LandRover , to and fro is like a few ringgit per person. If I am not wrong , it is like 9rm.

The places up there very run down , not many mantainence was down!
Anyway, it is not bad to have a visit up there. Have fun!

Cheers,
Shirley
