I'm just surprised that no-one seems to mention it.  Are they that infrequent?  :D  And do back-up generators in condos work?  Get stuck in lift/elevator  :-\ ?

In Phuket it's a regular occurrence.  Setting up the video to record something is always hah-sip hah-sip (50:50).  The brown-outs are the weirdest things - never experienced them anywhere else in the world.

Here in Tanjung Bungah, in the time we have been here (from end of February) once for about 1 hour.
What is a brown-out? Malfunctioning sewer?

Had a blackout once in our condo. Well that was our fault  Got back from Langkawi 11pm Chinese New yr eve and everyone turned on the 4 ACs in the whole unit within 1-2 minutes and that shorted everything!

No black-outs but for sure Astro 'blackout'  ;D  Even a sudden torrential rain will affect the signals  ::)  Not sure why it does that. In Alberta we get snow storms and severe weather but our tv and cable channels were not affected.

We some times get 'black-outs' in our area, mainly the street lights on the main road, but the side road ones are not affected. Must be supplies from different transformers.

We do get them but they are very rare. Gotta thank the British for that....see that is where Thailand lost out, and on cabling; the road infrastructure, and so on Blah Blah Blah :D

The generator in our condo is powerful to supply emergency lighting, drive the lifts, allow security tags to work etc....but that is about it....you just have to swelter, unless Tenaga bring along a couple of their juggernauts, and hook into our system...then everything is fine! f.yes

By the way ...what is a 'brown out'? ~20~
The trouble with taking the ‘middle of the road’ position is that you get run over from both directions.

hi,

Here in my bit of Perak powercuts are about once every 2 months and usually last for a couple of hours.

If I'm in the house I telephone the local office and get the ETP. All very friendly.

Hi All
Brownouts are a spike or irregular power supply. They are very bad for sensitive equipment like computers. You should have surge plugs on all of these, this will help with brownouts.

Nah - in fact, we do not have sewers here  ;)  Here's the techie answer:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_outage

We're on 3 phase electricity here (whatever that means - this is Mr P's department again).  When there's a brown-out, you find some things working, some things not.  It's pretty weird.  You'll be sitting there and the lights starting going off one by one, then come on again, some aircon working, some not.

Sounds like we have improved electricity to look forward to - that's nice.

Hi

Our experience is based on living in a Bungalow, just off Jalan Semarak (Menara Celcom and the TM Multimedia Centre) in KL city centre.

We freqently get power cuts and the fuse box trips about once or maybe twice a month, its used to be all three phases but now its just one or two, its an absolute pain in the ar*e.
We have three phase wiring and copper conductors planted around the house and a brand new anti lighting system and multiple surge protectors.

When the lightning hits KLCC we have often been in shops and the electricity has gone off. Also the frequent construction in the city centre means that power has to be turned off and cables are sometime mistakenly cut through.

Prior to doing the anti-lighting upgrades on our house, lighting strikes have caused over 7500rm of equipment to be replaced, this was partly due to a direct lighting strike to the house.

In 11 months here in our rental house in Melaka we have had only 1 power cut.  That was when workmen digging up the road with their JCB dug through the main cable.  WHOOSH!  TNB restored power in about 5 hours. It was a big job.

Also we have had about 3 or 4 instances during electrical storms where the house fuse box has 'tripped'

hi,

What a coincidence. This morning the power went off some time before 8am which is when the room temperature, or lack of air-con, woke me up. It was restored about 11am, so I went back to bed.

About the same time a power cable fell across our access road. So I telephoned the power folks and spoke with an operator and told them about it. I received a return call 5 minutes later from an engineer to get the exact location. And within 1/2 hour a team arrived to fix it. This afternoon I received a call from the earlier operator to check that the work had been done. Excellent service, and all in English, wonderful.

In the 10 years in this place I've only once had the effects of an electrical storm. The lightning crackled right overhead and blew out the main cable fuse. There was a burning smell, rubberish, but my neighbours and myself weren't touched. Boy, did the stray dogs go berserk. I need to replenish my karma.
