What I Would Miss Most If I left (or had to leave) Malaysia!
« on: September 10, 2009, 09:49:13 PM »
This thread is a bit different from others so far, read the topic title carefully ::) .

As the initiator of the thread I reserve full rights to delete anything negative of 'off-topic'.
I wish to keep it pure....only list those things that you would really miss.

Your choices don't have be exclusive to Malaysia, as several neighboring countries offer similar options in terms of food, weather etc. So assuming you were moving to deepest darkest Siberia...what would you really miss?

I will get it going with the next message in this thread....and lets see where it leads to......f.wink

I would miss most (in no particular order):-

1) Curry Laksa.
2) A huge variety of inexpensive & delicious foods
3) 12 hours or light & 12 hours of darkness
3) Petrol costing one third the price of the same in the UK
4) The ambient temperature never dropping below 22 degrees
5) So many beautiful girls....everywhere!!!
6) Siew yoke (I am sure that will be jibberish to most, but it is basically pigs bits in a delicious noodle soup) :D
7) Fairly relaxed rules & regs
8) Real jungle - almost on your doorstep, with a modern city a stones throw away.
9) Good highway infrastructure for a developing country
10) English widely spoken
11) Being able to swim in a pool or the sea without fear of freezing to death
12) No strong winds ....... so great for cyclists (like me)
13) Being able to play golf on any of up to 50 courses within 50 kms of my doorstep (without breaking the bank)
14) Having a reasonable selection of 'International' TV channels to choose from inc BBC World & BBC Entertainment
15) Blue Skies ...much of the time....It just makes me feel good to be alive.
16) Being able to take a cold shower after exercise without freezing my n*ts off!
17) Being able to attend 'big events', and find that you don't have to spent 3 hours getting there, and longer getting home again.
18) Living in city where you can practically get everything, but has more of a 'small town' feel to it!
19) Surrounded by a fair amount of greenery, long may it last!
20) Transport to the airport 60+kms away for RM9 (less than 2 quid)!

P.S I will add more as I think of them and there are many more.

I'm inspired by positive posts and I would like to add my own list if I can put it in a list.

1) I would miss the people. Always smiling, always happy no matter how little they have. I deal with some of the poorest people on this planet..try living on 50 pence a week for everything...and still they smile. They welcome me into their houses and would gladly give everything to a visitor. They will ALWAYS feed you first knowing that if you eat it all there is nothing left for them. But they would be proud to have done it as it's custom.

2) I would miss the sincerity of giving. I have , in the past , been very moved by a worker or neighbour who turns up and gives a gift of some fruit picked in the jungle and carefully wrapped in newspaper. No money is involved. Just sincerity.

3)I would miss the tolerance. I have yet to embrace all of it but I am learning to relax on some of the stuff that goes on. They are often impervious to noise. Try travelling on an Indian Video bus, or having Spanish neighbours who like music, or even the Muslim call to prayer if you live too close to a Mosque. It is me who has the problem and not them. I'm working on it.

4)I would miss the equality. When I am in the village area where I live everyone is the same. There is no idea of my house is bigger than your house, I earn or have more than you do, look at how rich I am. I know as a rich foreigner it can never be equal but from the other perspective we are all the same. Mossies still bite, dengue fever is a threat, snakes don't care, dog fleas attack...so you soon realise you are no better than anybody else.

5)I would miss the children shouting 'hello' at the tops of their voices as you drive past. They are uncorrupted by foreign greed and psychological damage. They just play and then sleep and then play some more. I also love the fact that they run around naked and pee where they want without the need for 5 changes of nappy everyday but that probably makes me sound weird.

6)I would miss my dogs. They have never been walked. Never wear a collar or lead. They are out all night on guard duty. They chase about in the jungle. They bark at the slightest movement keeping me safe from anything.

7) I would miss the cows that wander about. They are released in the morning and venture off where ever they choose sometimes miles away from home. At dusk they make their way back and settle down for the night. And we thought cows were dumb!!

8)I would miss that chance of forgetting about property prices, stock markets, interest rates, oil prices, wealth , greed, bragging, . It's nothing. It just makes you miserable. I try to forget these things but it's quite hard.

9) I would miss always being warm. I am a 'cold **se' and suffer badly in anything less than about 23 degrees. We have just had the hottest August on record in Australia apparently and I was freezing the whole time.BRrrrrrrrrrr.

10) I would miss the chance to continue learning and understanding of another culture, of another country, another way of life. I personally think we got things so wrong in the west and if we can open our hearts and minds enough we could maybe change things. I was never happier than when I lived as a young man in very primitive conditions for quite some years in a little bit of paradise. Wealth seems to have pushed me further and further away from those times.(or is it an age thing?).  I still have so much to learn but embrace every day as it's another chance. Don't get me wrong here , I'm not blissed out. Sometimes my friends and neighbours talk a load of old rubbish and elements of their lives are clearly wrong but we learn together.

These are some of the things that make me happy. I don't expect anyone else to appreciate the same things. I respect any path that anyone has chosen to take. I also would add on to my list all the things that FCS mentioned. I love it.

In the words of the late, great John Lennon.
Just @#$%^&* relax.  (our mantra)
Loopi. ;)

I know Thailand is not quite Malaysia, but I think these items are common to the region:

I think a much-appreciated but little-lauded feature is the asian-style bathroom with ...ahem... "toilet spray".

Also, it's wonderful to not have to wear clothes to keep warm in the apartment.  Indeed most of the  time, you HAVE NOT TO wear them.  This is a very comfortable thing.

The sun heats the water tanks on the roof so you can have as many showers as you want in a day with minimal or no power consumption, and don't feel cold afterwards.

In the west, particularly the cold countries, life generally somehow feels GRIM.  Perhaps it's the grey skies.  Here, it's all mostly bright sunshine and you feel happy and relaxed all year round [except at visa time!!].  Even when it's grey overcast, at least it's warm, the rain is refreshing and the storms spectacular.  You can get wet without getting cold.

When you go to a hospital, the doctors are waiting for you, not the other way round.  You can see a specialist 5 minutes after consulting the generalist.  You can get dentistry done in the same hospital visit.  And when you get the bill, you get that warm cosy feeling inside and want to giggle.

Not having to change the clocks twice a year.

No spiders, no cobwebs, no moths and no flies. [I know this condo is probably exceptional but I haven't seen a cockroach either, in 3 years.] :)

1. Top of the list - I'd miss the year round 'warm' weather and seasonal tropical thunderstorms

2. Would miss having no neighbors reporting to the local municipal of weeds on my lawn

3. Would miss the ease of getting a wide variety of delicious hawkers food even at 12 midnight esp 'Penang char koay teow'

4. The luxury of eating out every day if I feel like it and no holes in my pocket

5. The cost of electricity for running AC & electrical appliances;  property taxes; gasoline;

6. Would miss the 5-10 mins waiting time to see my GP (Rm40-50 inclusive of a course of antibiotic); same day referral to see a Specialist; instant arrangement for surgery - this is not heard of in cities where I used to live back home

7. Sandals and flip-flops; summer clothes year round

8. Would miss hanging my orchids year round outdoor that bloom a few times a year

9. Gardening year round

10. Cycling Jan-Dec

11. Same car tires and motor oil

12 Would miss hearing "that's so far to drive from the north of Penang island to Bayan Lepas airport and QueensBay Mall"  ;D
