I spent some time working in (4 years) and touring the USA and I cannot think of a worse place to live (even if you could get in). I would rather brave the UK weather than contemplate the USA. Now Canada is a different matter especially Vancouver. But again getting in is not easy. Apologies to any USA members of the forum this is my own opinion and no doubt they think it is the best country in the world - considering that 85% + of them ( i.e. Americans) never travel outside its borders probably not surprising

Cheers

Brian

Dear FCS, I am lead to believe that all income generated in Uk is liable to UK tax even if I am not a resident unless double taxation applies

Brian,
It seems like you really don't like anything about the US, including the residents who don't wish to travel outside of their country. Maybe one of the reason people don't travel outside the borders is that the country is so large and there are many places to see. Evidently you visited every single one of the 50 states and found nothing you liked. You probably didn't like the country before you went there, so nothing could have pleased you. There are many beautiful places there to retire, but they are very expensive. My brother visited England and Italy thinking of retirement, but hated them both. Instead he settled in a small town in the mountains of Vermont.  Each to his own and for his own reasons I guess.

Hi georgeshooter ....you said it yourself as in bold red above.

I have written reams on this forum about it...so I think I know ;)
The trouble with taking the ‘middle of the road’ position is that you get run over from both directions.

Steveso - just giving an opinion - which by the way I am entiled to as you are. No need to be aggresive my dear fellow. Just did not like the place after 4 years I think I had enough time to make my mind up. I won't bore you with  the many reasons why. The point I was making about the 85% + who have never travelled outside its borders is - HOW THE HELL DO THEY KNOW !

I was not being aggressive so much as defending those fellow countrymen who chose not to travel beyond their borders. Because you did not like the country or the people you have summarily dismissed the entire country as not worth living in. I presume there are other large countries where a majority of the citizens have not ventured outside of the country because they either don't have the means to or the desire to. That is their choice and should not be demeaned because of it.

Well, Brian, this American has traveled to Malaysia (10 times), Thailand, Canada and the Bahamas and still thinks the US is the best place for me.  Sorry you had a bad experience.  But you seem to have a deep seated grudge against all things American.  You mocked Obama right after his election.  What other western country would ever freely elect a man of color?  Maybe what you dislike is change- but that's what America has always been about.  Ask any poor soul in a third world country where he would want to raise his kids if given a chance.  But I suspect you know the answer...Jim

I did not say I had a bad experience or I disliked Americans ( please read carefully what is posted and point out to me where I used any such language or even inferred it- pehaps an apology might be in order)  I just said that it was not the place for me - Ok. God knows what Obama has got to do with it and again if you read what I said there was nothing "mocking" in it whatsoever. I was also not demeaning anybody I was just pointing out a fact if 85%+ never travel outside their borders what gives them the divine right to say our country is the best in the world. I think your knee jerk responses to someone just expressing their views where they would or not want to live may say a lot why America has become the most "misunderstood" country in the world .

Cheers

Brian

What other western country would ever freely elect a man of color?

The same country that lied to the rest of the world in the UN assembly?

That was Bush and you are right.  He lied to (and shamed) many Americans for 8 years as well.  But what he did has had its way with him and his party.  Now, when abroad, I am greeted with more smiles and less scorn thanks to the new White House administration...Jim

Brian, be glad to refresh your memory.  You mocked Obama in your post on Nov 5 when you wrote he will fail like all the other "messiahs" in history.  You even stated he may be a worse President than Bush- all predicted just 1 day after his election.  Gee, now why would I think you dislike my country?  Expect no apologies from this quarter...Jim

I am often frustrated, confused, surpised and even shocked by Malaysia but falling out of love with the place definitely not. There is too much to learn and enjoy, I would need another half century to become a bit jaded. I have travelled a bit and the only other place I find as desirable as a place to live would be Cornwall in the UK, and then only for the pasties ;)

Regards
