Are You 'Falling out of Love' with Malaysia?
« on: August 10, 2009, 03:07:37 PM »
Credit to Brian for the thought which inspired me to start this thread.

I guess after 10 years we will soon be ready for a change....but still 'restricted' by kids at school.

We are fed up with the haze every year, and lots of local burning which exacerbates the situation...and no one does anything about it.

and no one does anything about it

and no one does anything about it

and no one does anything about it.

Yes I have repeated this sentence several times as to me this is the essence of many of the ills & evils one currently experiences in Malaysia, be it from law enforcement to pollution to rubbish everywhere to the attitude of many road users.....

I think it is called 'Tidak apa' or 'Tidak aap attitude'

I will add more as I get inspired by replies :D
The trouble with taking the ‘middle of the road’ position is that you get run over from both directions.

Maybe an internal change of view may wash away some of the blues

Don't think I Would want to stay in one place (of a country) for 10 years either

Cheers

Agree with JJ - you just need a change.  10 years is a long time and you like travelling so try another country.  You'll still have your MM2H in tact I guess so it's a good back-up.  And better to do all these things while you're still relatively young in my opinion.

I think everyone gets fed up everywhere from time to time.  There's niggles everywhere.

Anyway I think we're all dying to know where you've got in mind  ;)

Malaysia JJ; Most of the things that bother me are not specifically related to KL, but are pretty much evident through-out Malaysia

1.  Perpetual haze from June to September and still people burn their rubbish/leavers outside their gate.

2.  Mat rempits & driving skills/attitude generally

3.  Rubbish is thrown anywhere and everywhere (again with the exception of peoples own compound. Anywhere else if fair game, especially the rivers/lakes & the sea.

4.  Poor quality of workmanship and little or no quality maintenance.

5.  Despite the recent drive by the new PM, ‘1Malaysia’ is just a dream, the races are getting more and more polarised day by day; race is still a key question on many application forms. It’s a county of three different races and a smattering of others thrown in. Three different languages plus ‘Manglish’. Three different religions. Three different schooling systems & a smattering of same for the expats. Three different cultures, (good for tourism). Etc etc

6.  [I’ll throw in another for good measure]. The general ‘cost of living’ is still less in Malaysia that back in the UK (for example). However if you wish to have luxury items such as a good quality car/motorcycle, and many of the other things we hanker after (Hi/Fi; cameras; etc), then you really do ‘pay through the nose’ for them, thanks to very heavy duty.
Now I didn’t mention booze, but I will now. Isn’t Malaysia the second most expensive country for beer second only to Norway I understand?

Maybe I am getting too cynical, or maybe is really is that I have lived here too long!

For my 40th I was in Saudi Arabia

Had to have a dram on my 40th

Black Market bottle of Whisky - £100 - Year 2001

Difficult for you Fizz as most of those problems (not Haze) is everywhere in Asia and if you go back to the West - Well you are not is Asia

Central America - Crime - and I have to say if Crime is not in your top 5 then you are doing OK where you are

Just the 10 year Itch Fizz - you need a change of Direction

And how much is a big bottle of Tiger in a supermarket - I AM PAYING £2.15 for 640 Ml at Tesco

Cheers

Not true a beer in bar in Amsterdam is much more expensive then in any pub in downtown George Town and don't even try to get one in some middle eastern countries.
Oh and don't get me started on Iceland, now that's very expensive to get a decent drink. Doesn't stop them to get fully loaded on the weekends. To make it up very beautiful women also.  ;)
Unfortunately they go flat out on the pavement in the weekend as well.

Hmmm that's not cheap. I tend not to buy beer to drink at home. However that price is about the price we pay when we go for a Chinese lunch or dinner RM13 or 14.

I got the info on the most expensive Country for beer with the exception of Norway from a quote from the Guinness & Carlsberg top brass....but perhaps they were only politicking f.yes

Which is another reason for staying way from here

The Pubs have become very expensive and they have lost all there atmosphere now - just youngsters out to get tanked up as quick as they can

Never go anymore - buy a couple of bottles and have some mates round.  and as for eating out, crap service, expensive and a choice of chicken or pizza

and heaven forbid you might want some spice

Sitting on a street corner - having finished a meal my bottom will wished i had not and having a beer watching the comings and goings in the warm wind (rain or not) - is one of the things I miss the most

Cheers

Wow!  Very beautiful women going flat out on the pavement.  Perhaps I should see this.  Do they charge for entry? ;)

Seriously, I would like to thank FCS for the 'top five' thing.  It really helps novices like me "see" the place better from afar. :-\

This from ThaiVisa forum regarding the 'flu:

"""Meanwhile a doctor in Malaysia has said that avoiding masturbation and homosexual activities are among preventive measures people can take to reduce their chances of contracting the virus.

Dr. V. M. Palaniappan, an eminent practitioner of complimentary therapy, said that such activities caused the body to develop friction heat which in turn, produced acid and made the body hyperacidised.

Dr. Palaniappan told Bernama, the Malaysian national news agency, that masturbation and homosexual activity made “the body become an easy target for pandemic A(H1N1) infection,” however, the normal sexual union between members of the opposite sex was absolutely safe.

Dr Palaniappan, a former associate professor of ecology at Universiti Malaya, said his 33 years of research had shown that high acidity in the body resulted in loss of immunity, thus making people more susceptible to viral diseases such as pandemic A(H1N1)."""

Words fail me.  Would someone like to try?

I am surprised he didn't prescribe a course of antibiotics like every other doctor here does! Hearing statements like this from so called educated professionals is scary, especially when Malaysia touts it's medical tourism industry.

I thought about posting that Thaivisa link yesterday then thought better of it  ;)

Re Fizzy's 1 to 6 points though, newbies should bear in mind that this is KL (and KL 'burbs more specifically?) he is talking about.  Okay I've only been to KL several times, Kuching, Langkawi and Penang - just 4 locations in Malaysia but all very different, different good things and different niggles too.
