hi, rmyu,

Yep, it's also back in the Lumut, Sitiawan area of Perak. It's not so toxic this time.

As usual, the local land-clearers have taken the opportunity of the smog to burn their stuff. I'm no green-fingers but I would have thought that a bit of composting would help with the land-clearing and, at the same time, improve the soil. Seems that no-one around my area has thought of this.

regards, Scott

The smoke smell was quite heavy three days ago in Penang, yes with the addition of local burning!
Yesterday was not bad.
No rain in the forecast.

If KL was as hazy as PEN this morning (31/8) the Merdeka guests won' t like it.  It's the longest intermittent haze in 3 years.

Just got back to KL in wee small hours of the morning. Now at 12.30pm on Saturday it is not bad at all...probably residual smoke from the millions of Ringgit fireworks which no doubt lit up the night sky in the last 36 hours or so.
Anyway it is very nice to be back
The trouble with taking the ‘middle of the road’ position is that you get run over from both directions.

hi, fcs,

Welcome back. The Sitiawan area has been pretty quiet. Not much celebration guess it must all be happening in KL. The haze here is so-so, and as rmyu posted, it's hanging around for such a long time.

I'll be taking a break in Singapore for the next few weeks. As a lot of time is spent in air-conditioned shopping centres, the outside air-quality doesn't impinge so noticeably on daily life.

regards, Scott

Depressed by the long spell of haze this year I was considering leaving Penang/Malaysia.  Yesterday the heavy rain washed away the air pollution.  By noon today(7/10) the fresh air, partially cloudy blue sky and clear distant view changed my mind.

Got the flu at the wrong time and still suffering from irritation of the bad air quality  :(

Compliments to  Dept. of Environment for publishing improved detail air quality charts.  Wish them luck in controlling air pollution.  Recently Penang morning air smell smoky.

I was awaiting a fellow Australian to jump to the defence of all Antipodeans but alas it does not look like that will happen.
Of course it is not the Australians barbecuing at breakfast time. Vic bitter does not go down easily with eggs.
Now if it was an exquisite evening barbecue with a lovely Margaret river riesling or even a New Zealand sauvignon blanc then yes it's us Aussies.

On a more serious note how is the Indonesian burn off affecting Penang this year?

I am monitoring the haze from my balcony each evening and there is a bit of a grey mist looking towards Kedah Peak. I think that is just normal pollution. Masy be the monsoon is keeping the haze down.

Never having lived pollution free in the UK it looks good to me.

A drop of the old Penfolds Chardonnay from the Adelaide Hills will do me.

The air in KL today is awful....you can smell the smoke.....not pleasant.

Wish I could just pop down to NZ for a few weeks until it all clears! >:(

After a beautiful clear day yesterday in KL, the Haze has returned with a vengeance.
Visibility about 3kms and you can smell it! Yuk ...horrible >:( .

What's it like in Penang folks?

Hey FCS,
are you still there?
Is there a public holiday in MY/KL today. I am trying to contact some business numbers and getting no reply from any of them.
Is the haze affecting the phone system/did it kill everybody yet?
Loopi.
