Anyone know what the van with the loudspeaker is saying?
« on: July 28, 2009, 11:05:40 AM »
Every once and a while we hear an unmarked minivan with a loudspeaker broadcasting a childs voice in Malay, the van does not appear to be selling anything (I have seen the vans that sell the mattresses also broadcasting with a child voice or honking the horn).

For some reason I think it may be to do with water works or similar - but as the van has no markings its difficult to tell

Anyone got any ideas?

(If its a regional thing - we are in KL)

Hi Corporateangel,

If I have to guess, I think the van with the loudspeaker that comes around your neighborhood was yelling annoucing in cantonese or perhaps other local dialects "Buying Old Newspaper, Buying Old Newspaper", and and they drive around the neighborhood, they broadcast the message and you will see people who have collected old newspaper bringing them out to sell. It's a way for the people in the housing estates to recycle their newspapers. Cheers!

I know  in my area that there is a van with loudspeaker that warns the residents  they will be fogging for mosquitoes.

hi,

Like Bachatakahuna, I'd always thought that it was newspapers and clothes. Sometimes there's a lorry that's collecting larger stuff, and a guy shouting out of the passenger window.

Then there's the Billion van with it's annoying (or appealing) jingle where you get a rolled-up Billion broadsheet with the latest discount offers. It's thrown into the compound whether you want it or not.  :)
