How do you know if you are paying the correct parking price?
« on: August 22, 2010, 10:27:13 AM »
The other night we parked up at Prima Tanjung in Tg Tokong and the eagle eyed ticket man spotted us (and the new mm2h car no doubt).  We said we'd be there about an hour and he demanded RM 2.50.  I thought this was rather steep and told him so and it was immediately reduced to RM 1.30  ::) and whilst we were fumbling for some change, he accepted RM 1.20.

So how can you tell if it's the correct price and is there anything you can do about it?

RM 2.50 is to much. If I'm not mistaken in center Georgetown it's about 60 sen-1 RM per hour.
It it's a official ticket guy the price is stated on the ticket.

You also have a bunch of parking places wit a flat fee. Normally 2/3 RM.

Mmm I guess we should have looked at the ticket.  The fact that he reduced it seems to suggest he's skimming a bit off for himself.  We have a lot to learn.

Papaya,
The going rate at Island Plaza over the road is 30 Sen in front of the building and round the side. If you park under Island Plaza It is RM 1 - 2 for undercover parking.
Last time I was at Prima Tanjung I told them to put the parking receipt under the windscreen wiper and I would pay when I left.
I don't think it was more than 60 Sen.
The underground carpark at Island Plaza is my choice because it has great access to Cold Storage and my car doesn't get hot out in the noonday sun. It has recently been fully repainted and reconditioned.
A walk across the intersection to Prima Tanjung is not fraught with danger and you can come back to a reasonably cool car and depart.

Thanks Jaydee.  We thought it might be a bit tortuous running across to Island Plaza but maybe we'll try it out.  We went again last night and parked up at Prima Tanjung.  This time got a different lady ticket lady.  First question was Where are you from?  We said Tanjung Bungah (heh heh).  Next question was how long to park and we got charged the RM 1.20 (which was the negotiated downward price before).  I am guessing if we had answered UK (i.e. visitor) we may have got charged more?  Anyway we are alerted now.  That's a good tip about just getting them to put the ticket under wiper and pay later - very smart, will try that one next time we go there.

hi,

Another tip. How do you know you're paying an appropriate price for anything in Malaysia.

Easy.

You go : How much.
He goes : RM30.
You go :    ::)
He goes : That's cheap . . .

. . . and you know you're being taken for a ride.

I park quite a bit at the road side of Prima Tanjung and Island Plaza ;)
P.Tg :
If you think you might need 30 mins for an errand just tell the guy and give him 30sen; as it's 60sen/hr there. If I have a hair appointment I just give him 60 sens, he sticks a little pink slip under the wiper and if anything more I pay the balance as he'd have stuck a bigger green paper under the wiper with the expired time of the pink one...you can check the time on the 2 slips. These guys are stationed on the grass part next to the parking strip - you see a small table and little umbrella, easy to locate them :)
There's an open car park behind - you have to go to the end of the stretch just before the temple and there is a separate 'bazaar' building with a clay craft shop in the corner...the road between the bazaar bld and compu internet games shop, drive in and the car park is right there on the left - 80sen/hr and usually quieter. The attendant is in the booth, he'll issue you a slip with the time and you pay when you leave as he clocks it in a machine. I use that more as my hair dresser is right infront of that booth :)

Over at I.Plaza: The stretch righ in front of the Plaza is 60sens/hr, but you pay 30 sens if you only use half hr. You pay when you leave the parking area - at the booth at the end of the plaza when you drive out. The stretch is run by the MPPP so anything by them is 30sens/30 mins or 60 sens/hr. I've even paid 15 sens a couple times when all I needed is run in and out of a shop to pick up some thing and some times free as I left before the guy came by issuing the green slips.

The parking spaces starting from the side of the Plaza where the booth is is run by Island Plaza is a diff rate, like the underground parking, RM2 or after hrs (I think 5pm on) is Rm2 flat rate.

If you park where you shouldn't and are so lucky to be caught - areas under MPPP the fine is Rm30 to be paid at Komtar. The main roads under city the fine is still Rm30 but pay at the main police station in Dato Kramat Rd or online at MyEgg  ~36~ ~36~

As one who was not "in the know" until recently I should add that if you get a green slip that is a normal parking fee slip as distinct from a parking infringement placed on your car while you are away you may pay it to any parking attendant anywhere on the island over the next few days.
This is particularly useful when you cannot locate the attendant when you return to your vehicle.

As a complete aside there are from time to time articles in the newspapers about replacing the parking attendants with parking meters. The reason stated for maintaining the parking attendant system is to provide employment for the socially disadvantaged.
For what it is worth I like the system.  :)

The internet does it again.
http://www.secureparking.com.my/?app=findparking.php&m=1#findparking
Click through to Island Plaza and the following info comes up.
http://www.secureparking.com.my/popup.php?app=showparking.php&pid=89&m=1&s=1
Now you have access and pricing to all parking by Secure Parking .

An update for Papaya,

Prima Tanjung has Underground Parking.
40 sen for 30 minutes and Maximum RM 3.50 per Day.
It is open until 10:00 PM and plenty of spaces available.
Just look for the P for Parking sign on the top entry on Jalan Fettes.
Cheers & Beers,
JAYDEE

Hello BB.  Someone I know  ;) parked on a yellow line near Prima Tanjung and got a nice blue notification under the windscreen wiper.  Do you know exactly where you go to at Komtar?  Which floor?  Is that the RM 30 charge?  cheers

Hi Papaya,

If it's on that inner service road right by the shops and banks that's under MPPP (to  pay at Komtar):
Take the escalator up to 2nd level where you pay for the property and land taxes, water etc. There are different sections and can be confusing. Look for the little info desk, show them the blue slip and they'll direct you to the right window.

If it's on the main road (Fettis Rd) that's under the police (to pay at Dato Kramat Police station). You'll need to go with some one as there's hardly any parking space around the police station and you're not allowed to drive your car in the compound! So one has to wait in the car at a side road near the station whole the other goes in - the 2 windows are on the far end on the ground floor 'pavement'- don't have to go into the police building. No numbers to collect, just line up.

Yap,  RM30 whether it's MPPP or Police issued ones :)
