Recommending Agents (Sponsors) for MM2H Program in Penang
« on: July 01, 2009, 01:59:10 PM »
Hi All,

I am currently looking at applying for the MM2H program but was wondering if people could give me names of agents they have used as site testimonials can be false as we all know so if allowed please let me know whom you have used and those to stay away from.  We are looking at settling in Penang so would prefer an agent there but KL would also do.

Have a look under ARCHIVES, I think there may be some useful info there.

hi,

Quite honestly, I'd just check-out the 2 agents listed on this Board (1) Joy-Stay and, (2) MyExpatMM2H.

In my own experience, getting a price from most of the rest of the agents is like pulling teeth. And anyway,  the charges seem to range between RM6,000 and RM8,000 (or up to the max. RM10,000) because, to quote one agent, "they can afford it."

It doesn't matter where the agent is located.

Yvonne at Joy-Stay is hands on. I don't know about MyExpatMM2H. Once you start getting fees from other agents you'll see what good value these 2 are.

The alternative is the DIY option of Direct Application. The details are given in posts on the appropriate Boards.

Keep the site posted on how you get on.

Hi All,

Thanks for the help I have looked up the archives (thanks for the link) and we will making up our mind tomorrow.  I will keep you all informed as the process continues.  I am also looking forward to our trip over this Sunday for two weeks to get a idea of just what I am letting myself in for.  Due to my  husbands job I am very used to moving suddenly and due to tax laws changing here in Oz we are voting with our feet hence the move and the suddenness of it all.  Thanks again and I must say finding this forum was of great help :)

hi,

Thanks for the comments. If you've got any questions just post. There are several posts on Penang vs KL. Obviously making a trip to check things out is the way to go.

My wife and I used Joy-Stay and we are very pleased with her. I would go for the semi do it yourself option.
During the whole process she was very helpful and after she gave us the OK for the paperwork we paid the fee and she submitted the papers to the authorities. Within 3 weeks we had our conditional approval letter.

Hello,

My husband and I just got our Visa stamped on our passport last week, we had the great help of Alter Domus, they are agents in Penang for MM2H for many years. I can recommend them without any restriction, they did an excellent job, we had no worries at all, everything went on smoothly, and they are very friendly. If you want more details don't hesitate to contact me by mail.

A nice day to you from a happy new MM2H'r  :)

Hi,

Thanks to both of you  :)

Scott: Alter Domus charge 8'000 MYR, inclusive they paid for both our visa for the next 5 years, and for the next 10 years we can contact them any time if we need any help. Apart from the money matter I must say they are very very friendly people and they reply extremely fast when we need their help.

Qjumper: Thank you for your proposal but we won't stay in Penang, we have bought a very nice house in Port Dickson, but we will go to Penang often for holidays. At the moment we are back to Switzerland  :'(  waiting to go to Malaysia for good in 9 months...one more winter in the cold...

Paying RM8000 for the MM2H Visa seems very pricy to me (as opposed to the DIY/no agent fee option I chose).  Why anyone would choose to pay any agent that amount is perplexing.  I guess different strokes for different folks...Jim

I think the great majority of us who went the DIY route would agree. However some people hate bureaucracy & 'hassle factor', and would be willing to pay handsomely to avoid same, and to them it is a good trade off.

Hence the ideal situation of having a choice.....but let's not go there again! ;)

As well as the hassle/bureaucracy factor I would say there is also (a) lack of time factor and (b) not familiar/understanding with Malaysian ways/culture (or whatever country).

Just from my own experience - in another country (Thailand) but also with a retirement visa - we went down the Agent route to begin with.  A lot of people on forums voiced their opinion that we must be barking mad but (a) we were working full pelt at the time of trying to get the visa and (b) not familiar with the way things should be done/the courtesy etc in Thailand.  Of course now, after a couple of years, we know the ropes and wouldn't ever consider an agents.  That's the way it goes.

And yup I think we'll probably go through a MM2H agent, though prob one of the cheaper ones and DIY.  And prob we'll end up renewing ourselves once we're familiar with everything.

Just my viewpoint from a Newbie  :)

From my experience paying premium rates for an agent doesnt guarantee removing the hassle factor. Apart from lodging the papers our agent little but drive us to Putrajaya, my wife and I did everything including chasing things up when they went wrong.

If you do need an agent then go for one with a proven track record for doing it right first time , everytime. Choice of agent is best done by the recommendations from people that have used them. And there are plenty on this forum.

If I had it to do again I would use the semi-diy option.

Why anyone would choose to pay for an agent ???  well,  it's simple....being overseas during time of application and working full time and having a busy life don't give much time to chose the DIY option. Each of us have different life and point of view, this is what we call "freedom"

I think this website was made to help each other with advices or have chit-chat talk, I don't think it was meant for people to "judge" what others do !

I take this opportunity to say THANK YOU to those who have helped me with their good advices  :)
