Will my UK TV work ok in Malaysia
« on: June 17, 2009, 01:47:21 PM »
I've recently bought a Samsung  UE40B7020 LED TV, of course now having already purchased this TV we've finally managed to sell the house and are preparing for our move over to Malaysia.

I really want to bring TV with me, has anybody else taken a UK TV into Malaysia and if so does it work ok.

I brought  over an 'old' non LCD UK TV.  It only had SCART connections, which are not used here.  In Malaysia its the component/RCA system - 3 pins, 1 for video and 2 for sound.  You may find that your TV has these inputs as well as SCART

So for Astro my older UK TV is useless but for playing DVDs using my UK Scart DVD player its fine.

Oh how I yearn for Sky Digital HD.............................................................  Astro quality here is like Sky was in its first incarnation back in the early 90s   :-\

Of course you could buy a SCART to component adapter but this might degrade the quality of the signal - I dont know as I have not used one.

Thanks Sag,

Somebody had told me that the sound wouldn't work properly over there, which I very much doubted.

I would primarily use the TV to receive Astro programmes not the over the air Malaysian broadcasts.

The TV itself has HDMI, Component, Scart and USB inputs so I don't anticipate that being a problem, It can even connect up to a router for the internet, not that I think I'll be able to do that there.

Thanks again.

Dave

Why not subscribe to GRABOID on the web and download TV. (US & UK)  Its fine on large screens too.  Bargain at from $4.99 a month.  Much better quality than Astro.

Hi All
If you have a friend / relative outside Malaysia why not install a SLINGBOX to the tv signal be it Sat or Terrestrial. The slingbox is then connected to the ADSL (broadband) and you can watch and control the signal from anywhere there is a broadband connection. I use it all over the place.
NB the people watching at home would need to be on the same channel or get Sky multi room in the UK/ second receiver.
Regards Martin
