On a separate note I can recommend the hamburger man at the Tanjung Bungah shops. Arrives at about 6pm and serves with his wife from a white van.... delicious !! Tried the hamburger form the man near the 7/11 ... okay but not as good.

You're living in Penang and eating hamburgers??!  :'(  Too much sun?

I used to cook a pretty mean rendang myself when I was still living in Amsterdam. So maybe I should give it a test run here and invite you both over to try it.  :D

it was not meant as an open invitation  :'(
We have a big table though  ;D

OK, its official  Stuurman cooks a great Rendang.

Molly and I attended for the inaugural Rendang supper and we can both confirm that he definitely has the touch! ~14~

After serving Melindjoe Crackers, Serundeng, Rendang, Chili Sambol, Rendang and another dish (I cant pronounce it) I will definitely not be entering Masterchef this year.

Who's next? Donohue the Barbecue King maybe! Perhaps we should hire a venue and have a cook off ;)

If you have a recipe post it here.

If you're ever down near the Second Link, there are a couple of seafood places out on the water. It takes a little navigating to get there, but it's by the PTP, which is Johor's major new port complex. There's Yeo's and Saujana's. Both are halal (unfortunately ... I love me a nice slab of cooked pork!). There's a link here http://putri-berendam.blogspot.com/2008/03/deer-meat-and-seafood-in-kelong.html to a review of Yeo's, with some pictures. Yeo's does the milder food, while Saujana's is hotter. But the deer meat @ Yeo's (rusa) is the real find. De. Li. Cious.

However, the toilet facilities are pretty, um, primitive. You can practise targetting the mudskippers through the hole in the floor at low tide,  :o so make sure the kids are empty before you take them.

After 5 nights of noodles and curries in Penang washed down with liberal amounts of vino, I jumped on the scales with trepidation this morning and, hey, I've not put on any weight  :D  :D :D

Re: Let's talk FOOD Penang Char Kway Teow
« Reply #39 on: August 09, 2009, 11:28:52 AM »
Being somewhat of a char kway teow afficianado I thought someone may like to try out this stall recommended by today's Star. :) :)

 PENANG

CHAR KWAY TEOW

Stall outside Kedai Kopi Sin Guat Keong

Corner of Kimberly Street and Cintra Street

Open 6pm-12.30am. Days off not fixed.

THIS is one of Penang’s red hot char kway teow stalls. It is run by Lean Joo Sean, who is carrying on the family’s 51-year-old trade. What makes this char kway teow more fragrant than the rest is the oil used to fry it. Lean uses a seafood-infused oil (oil that has earlier been used to fry prawns and mantis prawns).

Lean first fries a big batch of kway teow over a charcoal fire with seasonings such as soy sauce. He then fries each order individually, taking what he needs from the heap of pre-fried kway teow.

A typical plate of char kway teow here comes with cockles, prawns, mantis prawns, Chinese chives, bean sprouts and still runny egg. Lean’s kway teow is fragrant and slightly sticky.

A queue is ever present at this stall, but service is fast.

Sounds great <insert dribbly smiley> my kind of food.  Not sure the runny egg would be allowed in the EU though.  I'm sure the Char Kway Teows I used to get in Singapore used to have bits of pork and Chinese sausage though I guess the Halal stalls aren't going to go for that.

Attack of the fire ants
By IAN MCINTYRE

A COLONY of fire ants attacked a section of the Batu Lanchang hawker centre in Penang with several customers and traders suffering stinging bites that caused huge swellings.

“We came to sample hawker food and did not expect to be bitten by ants,” said a customer who was part of a group to savour the food at the centre.
Pest control: Workers trimming the tree next to the Batu Lanchang hawker centre in Penang.

When the ants first appeared on a tree several weeks ago, the traders sought help from the Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) to get rid of them.

Photocopier operator Lim Bee Bee said the MPPP workers put a chemical pesticide on the tree.

“But the fire ants were resistant to it and instead, they crawled onto the zinc roof,” she said.

Several of her neighbouring traders suffered huge swellings after being bitten, she said.

The tree was yesterday trimmed by a contractor hired by Batu Lanchang assemblyman Danny Law. His political secretary, Ooi Soo Chuan, said MPPP would also be asked to deploy its people to spray pesticide on the rooftop to destroy the remaining ants.

He said the insect could be dangerous to those with allergies as its sting could lead to health complications.

When contacted, a state Veterinary Services Department official said they would make an inspection to check whether they were more colonies of fire ants in the area.

Not guilty of gluttony
EATING SPREE WITH TIONG SUE LYNN

FROM my last article Penang Eating Spree, here is the second part of my eating adventure. This time around, I thought my trip up north was pretty productive, as I managed to try plenty of new places – some based on recommendations and some by pure luck.

● Hock Chuan Heong , Pengkalan Weld

I have to thank Tommy Lee of The Star for recommending this place to me – I really enjoyed my lunch! Since it was a full house, we waited for more than half an hour for our food. When the oh mee arrived at our table, I couldn’t wait to dig in and almost forgot to snap a picture of it. The gravy was not overly starchy and it had a hint of sweetness from the juicy oysters. The noodles tasted even better when they were left to soak up a bit of gravy. Bak Kee soup is made of pork slices which is coated with cornstarch and fried, before being added into a clear broth. The pork slices were smooth and slightly gluey, while the soup was well flavoured with cabbage, leek, pepper and chopped spring onions. I also liked the oh chien; it was soft and moist at the centre, and wasn’t overly starchy.  The oysters were tinier compared with the ones in the oh mee – they probably shrank during the cooking process.
Bak Kee soup: Good to the last drop.

● Hock Chuan Heong 344-G-5 Pengkalan Weld 10300 Penang

Tel : 04 2611004

Business Hours : 12pm - 6.00pm

Closed on Sunday

GPS Coordinates : N05 2420.1   E100 1952.5

● Balik Pulau Asam Laksa
Balik Pulau asam laksa: Not spicy or sour enough.

Many people raved about Balik Pulau’s asam laksa, so I had to try it for myself. The stall is located in Nan Guang corner coffee shop, and it serves Asam Laksa and Siam Laksa (also known as laksa lemak). Asam is used to add sourness to the laksa stock. A bowl of Asam Laksa comes with lai fun and a thick soup of shredded fish, garnished with sliced shallots, cucumber, pineapple, lettuce, mint leaves, chillies, bunga kantan and sweet shrimp paste. We agreed that the Balik Pulau Asam Laksa (RM3) wasn’t sour or spicy enough. It was not bad, but I think Air Hitam’s laksa tasted better. The Siam Laksa (RM3) on the other hand was very good. The soup is made from coconut milk, lemongrass and lime leaves. I loved the slight creaminess of the soup and it was not too sour. I wouldn’t mind coming back for more of this!

 ● Nan Guang Coffee Shop Jalan Balik Pulau, Balik Pulau, Penang, Malaysia  12:30pm - 3:30pm (Close on Wednesday)

GPS Coordinates: N 5 21.108E 100 14.146

● Bee San, Air Itam
Bee San pei pa duck: Get it fast.

Located at a corner of Air Itam road, it took us two attempts to find this coffeeshop. For those who are hopeless in directions like me, I’ve included the GPS below the address. This oyster omelette (RM15) is by far the best I’ve eaten in Penang. The egg batter is cooked with big, juicy oysters and finely chopped spring onions. I reckon the oh chien here is nicer because it is wonderfully crispy on the outside and soft at the centre. The cook uses plenty of spring onions in his cooking, which helps cut through the greasiness of the omelette, and giving it a refreshing texture.

I was lucky to get the last half of the pei pa duck (RM18 for half a bird) before the stall closed. It’s best to get there by 7pm, as they are sold out rather quickly. The duck skin was remarkably crispy and the flesh was very juicy. The sauce was savoury sweet with a hint of peanut, shallots and garlic.

● Kedai Kopi Bee San 584, Jalan Air Itam, 11500 Penang

6pm-12pm (closed Mondays)

N 5 24.279E 100 17.328   ● Yau Char Kwai, Paya Terubong

As a food lover, I’m always looking out for something new, and “out of the box”. Tan’s Yau Char Kwai was one of them. Here, the crullers are stuffed with different fillings such as kaya & butter (RM2), peanut & butter (RM2), pork floss & mayonnaise (RM2.50), tuna & mayonnaise (RM2.50), sausage (RM2.50) and honey (RM2). I ordered the kaya & butter, peanut & butter and pork floss & mayonnaise flavour. The yau char kwai was of just the right crispiness and they were quite generous with the filling. I liked the kaya & butter flavour, but it was the black and white sesame twins (RM2 for three) that scored high in my books.

● TE CHANG YOU TIAO WANG ENTERPRISE 1250-A, Jalan Paya Terubong,

11060 Penang, Malaysia.

016-433 7301 (Mr. TH Tan) 1.00 pm – 8.30 pm (Closed Alternate Tuesday) GPS Coordinates: N 5 23.657  E 100 16.587

● Bukit Mertajam Char Kway Teow

I used to think the best char kway teow came from Penang Island, until I tried the Duck Egg Char Kuay Teow (RM2.50) in Bukit Mertajam. The uncle is open for business from 9pm-2.30am. The char kway teow was aromatic and moist; I could smell it even from my table. To make the noodles even tastier, we ordered a fried duck egg each (RM1). The egg came drizzled with dark sauce, which I soon learnt, was duck flavoured sauce. Double the cholesterol, double the tastiness!

● Jalan Pasar (next to the Taxi Station),

Bukit Mertajam

Open 9pm – 2.30am

GPS Coordinates: N 5 21.886 E 100 27.613

That concludes my four days of eating spree, and you might want to postpone your doctor’s appointment if you were to indulge like I did. And you might want to consider eating healthily for the next one week or two, depending on the severity of your gluttony!

Tell me about Nasi Kandar - how do you order it?  Just Nasi Kandar?  Where's a good place to order it in Batu Ferringhi or Tanjung Bungah?  Anybody?

Scott, think we need this smilie on here.
