Thanks BB, Poul.  Okay I understand now - Nasi Kampur I have heard of - from Singapore days.  Guess we've got some words to learn.  Well... I know MAKAN  ;)

Not sure I know the difference between Nasi Kampur and Nasi Lemak.

hi,

Nasi Campur means Rice Mixed so it's rice mixed with vegetable (may have meat). Nasi Lemak means Rice Fat so it's coconut rice.

Nasi Lemak is usually served with ikan bilis.

Happy eating.

Two of my favourites are Apom Telur and Ban Chan Kway, (excuse the spelling)

Apom is a sort of indian crepe with coconut in the middle.

Ban Chan Kway is Apom with "A levels", usually filled with jagung (sweetcorn).

Can anyone recommend places to get these as they do not seem to be readily avilable?

Hi,

Who knows where to find in North Penang:

1. Nasi Lemak Rendang Beef or other dishes with a decent chunk of Rendang beef? (decent=not the shoe-leather type meat)

2. Indian restaurant cq. curry house serving the big balloon type poori? (diam about 25cm)

3. Indonesian restaurant serving Soto Ayam or mackerel from Jawa or just any Indonesan restaurant.

Thanks and regards,
Danny

Apom Telur and Ban Chan Kway are one of the cheapest food that can fill up your stomach.  So don't expect them to be sold  in shops or the malls.  They are usually sold at food stalls in the wet market or pasar malam (street stalls).

Bob, Apom and Ban Chang Koay can be found freshly made at the wet market in Fettis Park at Mt Erskin Rd. If you go too early, you'll have to line up!
Not directly in the wet market where they sell veggies and raw meat, but in the section before that - when you come in from the main road, park your car in the parking area or the front of the temple next door and walk along the left side of the 'wet market' complex.
If you crave for BCKoay on [bTues[/b] night, try the Tg Bungah 'nite market' at the front of the regular wet market, open 6.30pm-10pm. There are 2 stores that make them fresh - real yummy :P Of course there are other yummies, even fresh veggies and if you need some guppies, exotic fish, nail clippers, steaming peanuts you'll find them there  :)

What a yummy thread this is  :D

If someone sticks a plate of mee goreng, char kway teow or a nice spicy southern Indian curry in front of me, I will be in foodie heaven.

Mr P also loves his Indian curries BUT definitely needs a regular fix of a Thai curry.  So.... anywhere on Penang (North Penang?) where there's a fairly authentic Thai restaurant?  I saw a couple of Thai restaurants mentioned on a couple of food blogging websites.  One of them called Mom's Kitchen (doesn't sound Thai) looked to me rather like Chinese food.  Saw another one called I think Green Chilli Thai and Nonya in T Bungah.  Any good?

Just "OK-Lah" then I might try somewhere else ;D

I am off to take BBs advice and going to the wet market on Mt Erskine with a big sack.

Next Tuesday is a trip to the Pasir Malam at Tg Bungah.

After that a check up at the cardiac centre ~16~

Danny
I am also on the hunt for a good Rendang, can it be found in Penang these days. Free meal at Sri Anda Bawang to the first person to find it.

I used to cook a pretty mean rendang myself when I was still living in Amsterdam. So maybe I should give it a test run here and invite you both over to try it.  :D

I could never refuse a Rendang and certainly could not refuse your kind offer. But don't let everyone know otherwise you could be flattened in the stampede ;D

 Hi Bob
I actually had a pancake filled with sweet corn at the Wet market at Tanjung Bungah. Nice but didn't take me to food heaven unlike that wonderful nearby coffee shop !!

On a separate note I can recommend the hamburger man at the Tanjung Bungah shops. Arrives at about 6pm and serves with his wife from a white van.... delicious !! Tried the hamburger form the man near the 7/11 ... okay but not as good.

Another of my favourites is the coffee shop with the duck vendor in downtown Georgetown. Not sure of the road name but one of the main roads leading to the sea (clan wharves) from the Prangin Mall.

Hi Paul,
Home cooked rendang? Very tempting. Indeed it is better not to tell around and certainly not in a forum about food.
