Gurkha Justice Campaign - SUCCESS!
« on: May 22, 2009, 12:14:13 AM »
The Ghurkhas directly saved my Mother’s Life - and highly likely to have done so for my Father.        They have more VCs than any other British Regiment – and are a loyal, brave and remarkable people .... The British owe them much.  Well done Joanna Lumley  - your father would have been very proud of you.

In a message dated 21/05/2009 14:03:46 GMT Standard Time, joanna@gurkhajustice.org.uk writes:

At midday today, Home Secretary Jacqui Smith made the announcement to the House of Commons that the Gurkha Justice Campaign have been fighting for for years. All ex-Gurkhas who have served more than 4 years in the British Army will have the right to settle in the UK if they wish.

After such a long fight, with huge ups and downs, this is a superb announcement.

We simply would not have won this fight without the massive, overwhelming support of all those who have supported our campaign. To the hundreds of thousands of people who have signed Gurkha Justice petitions, lobbied their MP, campaigned, attended rallies and marches - thank you so much to you all. This is your victory. It would not have happened without you.

The Government has now responded to that campaign after court cases, votes in Parliament, a huge media campaign and, most importantly, massive public support. I am delighted, and humbled, at what has been achieved by our remarkable team.

The whole campaign has been based on the belief that those who have fought and been prepared to die for our country should have the the right to live in our country. We owe them a debt of honour - a debt that will now be paid.

With warmest good wishes,

Joanna

I remember the Gurkhus during the Falklands war in '82.  Superb soldiers.  Brave as hell and loyal to the Queen.  This is indeed justice done...Jim

Fantastic news for the Gurkhas and for the UK.

I came in contact with the Gurkhas many times during my service in Malaysia and in the UK and all were great guys.

They would always be top of my list for foreigners being allowed into the UK.

Dont try to out drink them and definitely dont play "split the kipper" with them.

djoerk, thanks for posting this one - Ayo Ghurkali

Regards

Bob

Who was you with - I did not know there was any Americans there (or am I getting confused)

I was with 42 Commando RM - Red Beach, San Carlos Waters (bomb Ally)

Worked with the Gurkha 2 times and had a serious socializing even once in Belize

Happy for the government to raise my taxes to pay for them to come "home"

Cheers

JJ

Great news indeed!  I served with the Gurkha's for a total of 6 years, 4 years with the 28 Sqn GTR in Colchester and 2 years with 6 GR in Hong Kong.  Along with many others I signed the petion and wrote to my MP.  I now live in Colchester were there are many retired Gurkhas living and working locally.  I expect to see more soon! :)

Jumping Jack,
I was referring to the TV coverage here in the US during the '82 Falklands War.  Of course I never served there- I was just an interested 31 year old America schoolteacher rooting for our British allies at the time...Jim

No offence intended

I thought you might have been on one of the many civilian supply ships that came into Bomb ally.  One of my jobs was to set up the initial air defence on there supply ship with GPMG until the real Aircraft Defence with Javelin came aboard

Thanks for rooting for us
