Really? Tax free car? Well, if that is really true, I am glad to hear that great news! That was really a good news for me.

Is it just me, or has the benefit of a 'Tax Free' car been eroded.

The reason I ask is that recently I found out that the amount of rebate on a Toyota Hilux is just around RM6,000 (hardly worth the bother). A year or two ago the rebate was much more (in the region of RM30,000, if I am not mistaken)!

I have just been informed of the rebate amount if I were to buy a Peugeot 308 (turbo or VTi), and it is a paltry amount of just under RM10,000 (around 10%). Now we know the duty on foreign makes runs close to 300% on some models......so is this so called 'Tax Free' car thing just a big con....with the middle man taking a big slice of the action for his own gain/profit?

If you look at some models on the list in this thread you will see that some cars/models in the Region of RM100k offer rebates of around RM35k....now this is more like it....but is this data correct??

My last point is that even after the so called Tax/duty rebate, you are still paying more for the top of the range luxury brands than if you were to purchase them at a high street dealer in the UK, to use just one Country example.

So my conclusion is that this is just one big CON.

Agreed

If I had my time again there is only 1 thing I would do differently.  I would have bought a new car in the UK and imported it 'tax free'.  Not only cheaper but with a far better spec.

I would recommend that any future MM2H'ers seriously consider this option rather than buying within Malaysia.

hi,

Thanks folks for all the posting on "tax-free cars" and keeping us all up-to-date.

I've never understood how the Import Permit system is dealt with in this set-up. Maybe it doesn't apply? I've always imagined that it is a separate item? However it could be the IP (applies on this model, not on that) that creates the cost differences, and anomalies.

Or maybe tax levies on different models, from different producers, in different countries are as complex, and labyrinthine, as the terms and conditions on airline tickets.

I wouldn't regard the tax-free car incentive as a CON. To me it's simply an incentive and an option, take it or leave it, or buy a Proton, or a used car, or a motorbike, or a boat (no traffic lights, no brakes, no problemo ;D ).

hi, Sag,

You posted about doing one thing differently. That makes a great new topic. Thanks for the suggestion. I've started a new Board "If You did it Again" on the Living in Malaysia category.

All cars to which the 'Tax Free' incentive applies are CKD (completely knocked down)....strange terminology I know, but it means they are assembled here in Malaysia, so the IP/AP (Import Permit/Approval Permit)  has nothing to do with these cars and the tax incentive.
The AP would only be necessary if you were importing your own car from abroad, on a 'tax free' basis.

What I meant by a 'con' is that the tax relief benefit has decreased dramatically on certain models at least, and it no longer makes sense to go thought all the hoops necessary to get the minimal amount of tax discount on offer.

Protons/Peroduas and all other Malaysian cars are also available under the 'tax free' scheme but have been omitted from the list in this thread as there are so many different models and permutations! :o

Maybe someone can take the time to add them in........I won't because I am not interested :-[

hi,

Thanks FCS for clearing that one up. Amazingly, until I just read your post I never twigged that Proton was also on the tax-free list.

So if I take my Harley Davidson Fat Boy apart and ship it in pcs, put it back together, it would come in tax free via my container?  Funny, someone mentioned that to me that is in the moving business.

hi,

For importing used household goods the movers arrange for you to pay a nominal sum, if any.

The concern would be in trying to register the Harley.

Nice idea, though.

Nice thought ....but you have to register, tax and insure it!!!!! :P

So how do you get round that tricky bit?

You can always buy a HD here in Malaysia ... NAZA is the sole official importer.

Just don't faint when you find out how expensive they are!

You have to call them for prices.

  • I sell cars and take photos with my DSLR!
great savings imo.

Would be great if MM2H were to include CBU cars in the list!  ;D

In any case, if you guys are looking for any of the CKD honda models, do msg me and we'll try to help!

Does anyone understand why the tax free amount does not appear to be a fixed percentage of the normal sell price?
