Hi all

Recently, I've read a lot of crimes occurred in around the Klang Valley area.
It seems the crime rate has climb tremendously.
Does it concern to you MM2H participants or have any second thought on moving to Msia?
Anyone would like to give some advise?

Hi Gin

I have not had second thoughts, but it is certainly a concern for me.
We hope to move to Malacca, where there is less crime then KL
We would ideally like to buy\rent a landed property, but have concerns with the security aspect, particularly as we plan to travel around the region a lot which will mean leaving the place empty for short periods of time.
I am now leaning more towards a condo, that way we will only have one front door and maybe a balcony door to worry about securing.  Most condo's also have some sort of security guards, although the standard of the guards can be very poor,  it's a bit of a deterrent.

We still have a few years to go before applying so we wait and see how things develop before making a decision.

Hi

I agree with Col about Condos. A friend of mine has a terrace house in Bungsar and he was lucky to get away with his life when a few robbers broke in and took away UK$5k cash. He was tied up and threatened by the home invaders.

Almost everywhere there is crime here in Malaysia. Most of it are blame on unemployed or illegal Indonesians. The other thing that is a major concern is car jacking. I was advised to lock my car doors internally whilst in it as motorbike gangs will surround the car and hijack it, sometimes, even killing the driver.

cheers

Crime is everywhere not just in KL or Malaysia!

Just take the precautions you normally would everywhere.

I have been in Malaysia (KL & Melaka) for 14 months now and it is no worse than when I lived in Spain.

And Col.  Melaka is a great choice - we are building our new bungalow here!

As part of my morning exercise routine, I often cycle around the crescent road near our Condo
Every time I do this route I have been very impressed when I meet a dear old lady with her maid out exercising with the aid of a ‘Zimmer frame’.
She can just about walk and may only cover a hundred yards in 20 minutes, but as least she is getting out and making the effort.
I always gain pleasure and inspiration from her determination, her lovely smile and her cheery ‘Good Morning’ greeting.
Last week however it was a very different story, It was approximately 8.35am when I met this dear lady & her maid, as I cycled along the crescent but this time they were accompanied by several other ladies, and there seem to be some commotion.
The dear old lady had tears in her eyes, and the maid was also crying.
The other ladies then helped the old lady into a car and drove her 50 meters to her house. I now knew there was something not right, so I stopped and chatted with several people who live very nearby.
It turns out that two ‘Malay speaking’ youths on a motorcycle approached the lady and the maid. The pillion rider produced a knife, and ordered them not to scream or shout.
They then pushed the old lady to the ground and snatched her gold necklace before riding off!

It must have happened literally a minute or maximum two before I arrived so I only saw the aftermath.

Two minutes earlier and I would have witnessed this foul act taking place. I know I could not have stood back, and simply done nothing, and who knows what the outcome might have been.
Maybe it was a blessing for me, but for sure I would have attacked, with only my mountain bike, fists and feet as weapons; but against a moron with a knife the outcome would have been by no means certain.

How low can someone stoop. Is anybody safe anymore? :(
The trouble with taking the ‘middle of the road’ position is that you get run over from both directions.

No, no one is safe.  Its not like 40 years ago.  There is no deterant any more.

But my point is that it is not just in Malaysia.  Its everywhere.

When we flew from Barcelona to Kl, my wifes handbag was 'snatched' at BCN airport.  She lost all her jewellery - every last bit.

The police there told us that they get 30-40 such incidents everyday!

We must all be vigilant, wherever we may be.

And FCS.  I do not know what I would do in encountering any 'situation' like you have described but you hear so many times that the 'Good Samaratin' gets injured or killed in these instances, that regretfully my instinct might tell me to not get involved and once safely away make a call the police.  Sad but probably true.

Almost everywhere there is crime here in Malaysia.

Would you say it is everywhere in Malaysia or just confined to KL and/or the large cities?  I've read about increasing crime in KL from first-hand sources.  I've also heard about a lot of crime in Spain and a lot of crime in Australia, though a friend living in Sydney says the crime there seems to be mainly in and around the larger cities.  The UK?  Well, yeh, we all know about the crime there.
