Lighting and Light Fittings
« on: January 20, 2011, 12:19:00 PM »
We are in the process of buying a place and getting quotes from various sources currently.  Just amazed at the difference in prices for light fittings.  I mean, isn't a light fitting a light fitting?  Is it really worth paying 5 times (and sometimes up to 10 times) the price for imported Italian fittings?  Are local fittings really that bad?

We were told to avoid anything from China.

When you buy please check the contents of the box - I have had to return fittings to various shops because bits were missing /cords too short/damaged goods etc. All shops were helpful when approached but it used up a fair amount of time going back and forth.

For bathroom lighting check if the finish will tarnish or not. We have installed number of bathroom fittings  we bought in the UK which after only a few weeks have started to show signs of tarnishing. As you might imagine we bought quality products but that made me think about the lighting for the largest bathroom so my plans for a really nice light from the UK (suitable for bathrooms) were changed to something not as stylish but functional with a mainly acrylic exterior which will not tarnish/rust.

Also - as you will know - discounts often vary significantly from shop to shop.

Final thought - we are in the process of renovating our new home and costs have proved to be higher than expected.

I wish you well with your plans.

Jac

We searched high and low for quaity lighting and generally found cheap and nasty or expensive and nasty China lights

So for our new build we imported all our lights from the UK - about 70 in total.

They were all of a far better quailty than anything available in KL.  For example the downlighters had integarl fire hoods.  All were obviously to British Standards

Even after paying for the lights to be securley packaged and for UPS Courier 3 day delivery, we saved about 25% in cost but for far superior quality.

It might be worth your while investigating this option?
