Hi FCS
A little off the topic but wonder what the forum thinks of my interpretation of the car purchasing rule, if we follow on from the I-Kad interpretation.

Car Purchase

Each participant is allowed to bring in his/her own personal car OR to purchase a locally-assembled car without the need to pay import duty, excise duty and sales tax.

Car Import

Application to IMPORT a motorcar from the participant’s country of citizenship/last domicile must be forwarded to the Ministry of Finance within a period of six months from the endorsement date of Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) social visit pass. The condition for such importation is that the MM2H participant should be the owner of the motorcar prior to obtaining the MM2H visa, as evidenced in the motorcar registration document.

To me that means each participant, ie A family of four could purchase / import four cars.
Hum I wonder if this would work?

Regards Martin

It won't work.

I have seen it somewhere before that the Ministry will not accept more than one application per 'family'!!

In theory youa re correct, and it should certainly be one car per 'adult'!

After all if husband and wife came and joined MM2H separately it would work!!! :-X :-[

That is good news FCS! I was in the same situation as your friend, now both my wife and I can get one, we definitely will apply for the card.

Hi Paul,

Could you pick one up for Molly and I while you are in KL ;)

Recently I went along to the Penang Rifle club and they immediately asked "are you on the 2nd home program?" when I said I was they told me that if I had an ID card then membership of the club wouldn't be a problem.

I thought that was a pretty "switched on" reaction. Possibly it was because the club membership is mainly government employees, senior police and customs officers etc.

It was almost as if they were waiting for me to ask about MM2h ID cards

I would say the I-Kad is very useful.  It replaces your passport while you are moving around within the country. Imagine a MM2H family of 4 members going downtown for shopping. It is usually the poor wife who is the keeper of everybody's passports when moving around. And in Malaysia where snatch thieves are rampant, the chances of losing your passport to them is very high. Let's not talk about losing your wife .....I mean life. And God helps you when you want to make a report on your lost.  Replacing them is not only a big hassle you wouldn't want to go through it but also will cost you financially.  Anyway the card is issued FREE and I was told that if you are in the habit of losing it, the replacement is also FREE. What can you ask for more? If you can carry your I-Kad (a plastic credit card size which can survive a washing machine experience)  instead of your passpot (a small booklet which will be condemned when machine washed accidentally) wouldn't you opt for the former?

When you are doing a transaction over the counter be it in the bank or elsewhere, when asked for your name and address, you can just shaft the I-Kad to the counter person to extract the required information from it while you smile at him/her. It speeds up communication process especially when many foreigners names are in or sound like Greek and local addresses in Malay which, when spoken by a foreigners also sound like Greek to the counter persons. So the usefulness of the  I-Kad speaks for itself.

And lastly I believe the Government may introduce some special offer at tourist spots such as Aquaria, KL Towers etc where MM2H participants can enjoy entrance fees usually charged to locals which sometime enjoy a discount of up to 40%!!

It's too bad those of us who have the MM2H visa can't get the I-Kad card because we don't rent or own property there (MOT, are you listening?). I just carry around a photocopy of the ID page of my US PP when in Malaysia and have had no problems.  That helps a bit but I still want that I-Kad card.  Oh, well...Jim

I think 'the wink' indicates that you already know you have to attend in person as they need to take impressions of both thumb prints!! ;) ;) ;)

Went over to PWTC today to get my missus a MM2H card, just brought along original passport, and a photo copy along with my own MM2H card, very quick and simple in all took about 20 mins... If you need to get any passport photos done with a white background, just go along to the Canon centre on the ground floor and they will do it for you..

On a side note, I went to U Mobile yesterday showed my MM2H card and asked how much to get a post paid phone contract, they said 1000rm deposit as you are a foreigner (and presumably a larger risk of defaulting on a bill), still feeling a bit mad and wound up today I called the MM2H centre and talked at length to them about it, they took my details down and have promised that it would be discussed at the next MM2H meeting as they couldn't find anything wrong with the logic that we are less of a risk than even locals due to the financial commitment we have to make and my own point that they don't make me feel special, which indeed we are for qualifying in the first place and then setting up home here!

Hi Paul,
Glad to know it works. Did you take your S&P agreement/recent utility bill or not....or was your i-KAD enough?

Can understand your frustration with U Mobile & indeed Maxis, Telecoms & Tenaga.
This is a real good benefit the MM2H centre can make, and there is simply no reason they shouldn't do it immediately.
