Hi Scott

Proton vs 'quality' CKD

Well lets say its like choosing between:

A Beko fridge or a Bosch fridge

or between a Bush TV and a Sony TV

or between single glazing and double glazing

or between Ryanair and Singapore air   :D

They all do the job, just some better than others, in more comfort and will last a lot lot longer - so cheaper overall.......... ;D

So here's my question, why not just buy a newish Proton? No need to bother with tax-free, plenty of cheapish spare parts, plenty of places for repairs.  Fits in locally, pretty anonymous. :-\ regards, Scott

A very good point indeed Scott.

I don't actually need a new car!. However it may be prudent to replace the old Jeep with something a bit more modern, and with the extra safety feature of ABS brakes & maybe an extra air bag or two!
In reality a Hilux or Ford Ranger would fit the bill (as a 'run-about' car). However the tax rebate is only around RM6,000. Hardly worth the effort.
On the other had if one wanted to go for a very large rebate (in excess of RM150,000), then you are looking at a BMW 5 series or top of the range Merc or Volvo. Now here is the catch.....even after tax you would still be forking & I mean 'forkin' out somewhere around RM300,000. Wow that is £60,000....a helluva lot of dosh for a car that you could pick up in the UK which is only 2 or 3 years old having done a reasonable mileage for about £10,000!

If you ask me the whole 'Tax Free' car thing is a bit of a con, and I don't think I am about to be conned.
I didn't get the deal first time round when maybe I would have benefited a bit from it. Now it's 5 years too late!
The trouble with taking the ‘middle of the road’ position is that you get run over from both directions.
