At least it may be better to clear up the mystery about the tax situation when a "tax free" vehicle is re-sold. I don't know of anyone who understands the criteria, it would seem that if you keep the car in good condition then you pay more tax. This may not be true but as it's none too clear what the real situation is we just dont know.

Of course a new car for each visa period would be a fantastic incentive and keep us buying Malaysian cars.

Regards

Bob

As far as I am aware there is only one post  on the Forum which details the 'experience' of selling a 'Tax Free' car, and that is from MikeH, and can be found HERE

Mike did state the following .... "I was not shown any depreciation schedule for either the value of the vehicle or the amount of the tax. I am given to understand that the tax charged will be zero or negligible after 5 years but I have no evidence of this".....

He also said that he appealed the tax amount, and was informed that it was possible to have the amount reduced if the vehicle was in very poor condition, or if he had carried out significant repairs or modification to the car.

So Qjumper, you assumption re paying more tax if you take good care of the car would appear to be correct. How odd is that? ::) ::).
More clarity is certainly required.

Again if the tax reduces to zero or practically zero after five years, allowing the purchase of a replacement car would make sense.

Additionally many of us would opt to replace a 5 year old car with a new one anyway to avoid expensive repair bills as the vehicle gets older!
I used to indecisive....but now I am not so sure!

Tax free car every visa period seems like a good idea to me - but as prev poster said, some changes to the tax situation needs to be addressed.  It would stimulate the Malaysian car market so got to be good for the country?

Nice idea Nu Nu, I'll support you in your campaign. What about a new car for each member of the family not just the visa holder.  And another for the maid, why should she walk?

Just think how we could put the Malaysian car industry on a par with British Leyland, sorry they went bust; along with Volvo, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Ssangyong..., Jaguar, Lotus (no they are proton now), Landrover(no they are Indian), Rover( no Chinese) :(

Now I think of it the Malaysian car industry is doing pretty well on its own! ~14~

No need expat buy car lah,

Guys,

Can you confirm if my understanding of 'tax free' cars is correct please.

1. MM2H'ers can apply to import/buy a car 'tax free' - but when that vehicle is sold tax will be paid - at a rate still to be determined

2. if the car which is imported tax free is 5 years old or more at the time of sale is any tax payable on sale?

3. If an MM2H'er wishes to import their second family car and, irrespective of the age of the car, do they pay tax at the time of importation- again at a rate still to be deteremined - but not at the time of sale. The car I have in mind as the 'second car' is over 5 years old but is in very good condition.

Please feel free to correct me where I am mistaken.

Thanks as always
Jac
