Sometimes due to personal circumstances it is not possible to apply for the tax free vehicle within 12 months. Would there be any harm in extending this period, or just stating the only one car can be applied for during the visa period.

This topic has been partially covered in another thread.
There is little obvious logic in having a relatively short time frame in order to take delivery of a CKD car, especially if one has just gained a 10 year visa!
It is actually in ones interest to acquire the car at the earliest opportunity, as the tax repayable on sale decreases with time so this alone should be an incentive to purchase early in the Visa tenure!
The trouble with taking the ‘middle of the road’ position is that you get run over from both directions.

Tripper,

Iis really think you've lost it, the best chance is to talk to your original agent, or go to one of the main dealers & see if they have any comments, seems strange this was never explained to you originally as its a very important advantages of MM2H.

regards

Oh no, I knew about the incentive but not the time frame. :(

I wouldn't worry too much about it, all things considered there appear to be quite a few strings attached.

I've pretty much decided against importing a UK/IoM car under that part of the scheme and having followed Atilla's views expressed here a lot of the cars that you might want to buy are explicitly excluded.

So I wouldn't feel too badly about it.
Status - Currently back in Europe finalizing things for the move. Back in Penang permanently on Friday 23rd March 2012 :D

I agree buying a MM2H car maybe a compromise but I would not say “explicitly excluded” if you want Honda CRV you are very lucky, as each main manufacturer seems to select about two from their respective stable to be classed as CKD.

The MM2H car we selected & by the time we ordered & took delivery (about 9 months) it was no longer a CKD, although still a current model, & they have yet to (I assume re-tool) select the next model they intend to be assembled so it’s a moving target all the time.

As I agree with Atilla, if it’s only a glorified shopping trolley around Penang then it’s selection is less critical, but we would be lost without ours the amount of running around, mileage may settle down in time once we are more settled.
