Is Buffalo Beef??
« on: March 16, 2009, 04:59:12 AM »
Hi All,
I was looking at the supermarket shopping index that was kindly posted the other day. Although it was missing an essential (the price of guiness!!) I couldn't help notice that it was listing the price of bison/buffalo meat.
That got me thinking about whether buffalo was a permissible meal to Hindus as distinct from beef?
Cheers Donohue :)

It is bovine meat  - however, I have been led to understand that Hinduism is not necessarily a religion - but a way of life - so it depends on how a particular Hindu practices his "way of life".  So, not all Hindus believe that eating beef is a sin.   Today, a lot of Hindus are vegetarian and don't eat any meat at all (neither do Parsees); Some eat meat but not beef.    On the other hand "lower caste" and poor Hindus have always eaten beef as buffalo meat is more expensive.
