Hi Martin,

I have been trying Meeks suggestions but I cannot seem to download the pics on to this site. If you log in to whittleymarine.com and look under models it's the CR2800. The site also gives you specs etc. If you want to know prices drop me pm. I know the boats are available in the US and Oz but not sure of Malaysia. The one I bought was set up for fishing with the stern section set up with rod holders and bait board and marine cork carpet which is great as it keeps the "dirty business" out of the main cabin section. The full specs includes all sorts of goodies ( including bow thrusters) but pushes the price way up - beyond my pocket! I picked mine up second hand ( 80 hours) which had a big discount on new.

Cheers

Brian

Yep, it's best to go to the site as there's a lot on the site, including video.

Any boat manufacturers (powerboats) in Malaysia?  Know any good websites?

I'm in the process of applying for MM2H and have a 1995 Bayliner flybridge 35 foot twin diesel powerboat in Vancouver, Canada. It has its own generator and air conditioner, three staterooms and two bathrooms. max speed 14K and cruises at 10K.
I wondered if it was feasible or desirable to ship it for use in Penang or any other part of Malaysia. Does this kind of boat fit with the sea states around Penang and the Malaysia coast and where can one travel to with a range of around 200 miles before needing a diesel refill.
Does Malaysia tax or have any strict regulations on an imported US built boat.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Davita,

While I am no expert on boats and my seagoing experiences relate mainly to ferry journies over to Butterworth, I do enjoy a good harbour as much as anyone.

I recently came across this one which may be of interest to you. Its within striking distance of the islands of north west Malaysia and south west Thailand, thats a pretty good location I think.

There is a mediterranean feel to the place.

Welcome to the forum and enjoy Malaysia,

Telaga is on Langkawi - rather a lot of good marinas on Langkawi.  On the first page of this thread, second posting, Scott lists most of the marinas in Malaysia.  And, from what we can make out, less expensive than the Thai marinas.

We also have a Bayliner but it's just a 24 foot day-boat so no long distance stuff for us I'm afraid.

Thanks everyone for the info,

I hadn't even considered shipping my boat to Malaysia but now I'm intrigued. Boating here in the Pacific Northwest is great as there are tons of facilities, scenery and relatively safe waters, but the season is too short, only at best 4-5 months.

Scott, I didn't understand the rates at Tanjong City Marina. It says MYR 1.80 for say a 12m slip for a yearly rate...does that mean 1.80 x 12m = MYR 21.6, but is that x 365 for a year?

Where would anyone go to from this area...is Langkawi too far?

All info that anyone has would be much appreciated. I still think moving my boat there is probably not do-able but I'd like to continue investigating.

hi,

The yearly rate for LOA (length overall) in metres is RM1.80 per metre per day. So yep, for 12 M, it's RM21.60 per day x 30 days = RM648 per month x 12 months = RM7776 per year.

For example, for a daily rate for 12M it's RM2.65, weekly RM2.60, monthly RM2.15, and the above yearly at RM1.80.

The daily rate per metre starts at RM2.50 for 6M, up to RM4.00 for 60M and above. So it's much more economical to buy something over 60M (QE2, Queen Mary, USS Nimitz).  ;D

Langkawi is a long day trip, Phuket over 3 days, then there's the Andaman Sea.

Thanks Scott,

I was thinking of bringing my QE2 or larger yacht (when I win the lottery) but the depth at Tanjong City is only 4 metres. Bummer! I'll need to leave it moored in my dreams.

I also kinda figured the normal cost of a 12m slip to be as you said but was amazed as that equates to only US$180/month. Here in Vancouver city my slip is 10.5m (35ft) and I pay US$600/month on a yearly basis. Electricity extra.

Where else could a power boat like mine go to in the area that would be a pleasant overnight or two and have some facilities, even anchoring out? Are there any diesel stations out there?

David

Scott, it's a slow job to do a refit, always finding something else needs doing.

Regarding shipping a boat from North America. I have a 1972 French Dufour 35 fully refitted for trans ocean sailing, I am trying to find a way of getting it to M'sia.

The special ships for boat transporting are quoting US$1,000.00 per foot from South Carolina to Klang.

I am now considering getting a delivery crew or sail it myself (depends on the wife).

Anyone found a cheaper/better way?

hi,

Yes, a very slow job. The 72 Dufour sounds good.

I don't see that you have any alternative than a delivery crew or sail yourself, if you want to keep the boat. You maybe better off, financially and stress wise, in selling the boat in the USA market and buying something over here.

Does anyone know where to find larger twin diesel boats for sale in Malaysia, I know the Grand Banks are made in Singapore but is there a link I could find out this info.
Much appreciated.

hi,

There's a Grand Banks factory in Pasir Gudang in Johor. I guess that they make the boats in JB as the only GB link that I can find is in Sentosa (http://www.grandbanks.com/dealers/singapore.cfm ) at Sentosa Cove which is the marina.

Try the global GB site : http://www.grandbanks.com/index.cfm

There's this Singapore broker's site : http://www.rmarinesingapore.com/

hi,

The latest on my boat is that I'm back on course for re-building it. This is mainly due to nobody wishing to buy it, or at least for anything more than the scrap steel value.  :(

I've enlisted the working assistance of a boat-builder so there's now someone to hold the end of the tape - it was always difficult by myself for measuring anything over 3 feet. And as I'm paying there's a great incentive to get my butt out off the couch and contibute to life. Plus the guy is a real worker with high standards - the boat's gonna be something.

We're working out a programme that actually involves me getting down to some serious hours, like 9am to 6pm, and only 1 hour for lunch. The thin end of the boom I know, but it shows how serious things are.

It's all starting tomorrow so I'll probably be too "cream-crackered" for the next few days to even think about posting.

In the past 2 weeks, and on an ad hoc basis, we've already got the steering re-assembled and it works. The temporary companionway hatches are in place and the next job is sorting out the windlass which is lying around in bits in the spare bedroom. We need to relocate it on the fordeck and then get the chain in place etc. It all sounds easy but on a boat it always seems like moving the earth closer to somewhere else in the universe.   :-X

I'll then have steering and brakes in case the folks who own the land where the boat is standing decide to make me move on.

They want the land for other uses. I'm not surprised, the boat's been there 10 years, although I've paid for it on a monthly basis.
