Slightly back on topic (though only slightly) - Scott, anyone - are there any licences required for owning or piloting a powerboat in Malaysia?

And...... I'm looking at marine.gov.my website and under section Qualification it states that boat must be owned by

a. Malaysian citizen

b. Permanent residence of Malaysia; or

c. Corporation which are incorporated in Malaysia and wholly owned by Malaysian citizens.

Does MM2H count as Permanent Residence? (I thought PR was different)

hi,

There's the Langkawi Yacht Register which is very, very difficult to contact. If you're Malaysian you can register there.

I also think that a non-Malaysian can register and that's what I have been trying to find out, off and on, for the past 4 years. I'll just have to go and visit the place. It only seems to operate when Dr. M visits. Either to open it, or to register his yacht. Still, he set it up so I suppose that's right and proper.

For non-Malaysians if you own a boat it is normally registered in your country of origin. Or Panama. My boat, for example, is registered in the UK.

My boat is a sailing boat, however when I use the engine it is classified as a power boat. In Singapore a power boat license is needed but then it's such a small place that either you're in a marina/harbour or in the ocean.

I do not know if it is the same requirement in Malaysia. I'll check as this is an interesting point. I've always just shown my registration.

I've now decided to keep my boat and continue with the restoration as I've got the cash from the sale of my place in Portugal. I'm also going off the idea of going back to the UK. All those MP's thieving on their expenses, and me paying the tax that allows them to cheat - it would cause me stressful and terminal grief.

Well, that's the latest plan. And I'm never short of a plan, or two.

As work on the boat progresses I'll post some photos. I'm really gonna work this time, no more loafing.

PS and BTW : You're right. MM2H does not count as permanent residence because PR gives a right of abode, and mm2h does not as it is simply an extended social visit pass.

hi, JJ,

What sort of boat are you looking for? Give me some details, however vague, and I can look around here in Perak. There's plenty of 20 foot fibre boats available that would be ideal for day-trip fishing. There some with cabins for overnight stay-outs. All have outboards.

I would need it for fishing and days out. My boys are looking for Jetbikes they prefer seadoo.

hi, Martin,

I'll be back in Perak in a couple of weeks and will look around the local market and let you know what is on offer.

The  Boston Whaler is a great boat for fishing. Some of the new ones are beautiful. Not an overnighter though. I have just bought a Whitlley 2800. Not sure if they are available in Malaysia but they are a good fishing boat and have all the necessary for a good overnighter.

Cheers

Hi Brian
Congrats on the new boat, post a pic if you can please. I have hade a Whiteshark 285 club  and loved it
I also had a Boston whaler and really liked that too. I'm not sure if I should import the boat and get the tax off it.
