marriage in malaysia for uk man
« on: February 20, 2009, 03:31:07 PM »
Im a UK citizen. Been staying here in KL with my g/f for 5 months and im travelling back alone to the UK in 1 months time. We were together as a couple in the UK for 2 years before she came back to Malaysia 1 year ago.

We are wanting to marry here in Malaysia when I return here in 4/6 months time. The MM2H program is not something I am looking towards. As for the proposed marriage im wondering what the procedures are ?
What type of visa do I need to be able to marry her legally ? What documents would I need to bring from the UK back here with me ? Do I need to make a financial statement and have bank statements ?

I have read various articles at the Malaysian government site but it seems to make me confused about how to proceed. Im probably not wanting to work when and if we are married and living in Malaysia, but staying here with her is obviously important. Can someone give me some answers and advice about how to  acomplish my goal please, or point me in the right direction to where I can find information written by people who have experience of this type of matter.

Thanks.

Welcome to the forum,
I do not think this is the correct thread if you are not planning to join the MM2H programme.

However I am sure there is someone on the forum who has married a local lady here in Malaysia, and could be of assistance to you.

I assume your g/f is Malaysian, but is she muslim or other? as the criteria for marrying a muslim is very different, and you would be required to convert (assuming you are not a muslim)!.

Over to others......
I used to indecisive....but now I am not so sure!

hi,

Welcome to the forum. As FCS has posted, maybe someone on his forum can advise on marriage requirements?

You could also try posting at the Immigration Board on the Malaysian Forum over at alloexpat.com and keep checking there, and here, for replies.

As your girlfriend is Malaysian surely she or her family will have some idea, or know where to ask. How about asking at a local Methodist (or others) Church.

Is there a visa type for this? I thought that a social visit (tourist) visa was all that was needed. After all, from my own reading of posts on the Immigration Board, getting married does not give the right of abode. And PR for male spouses is impossible (according to posts on the board). So without PR you can only stay on a visa which is, by definition, a temporary arrangement. Guess it's your choice, MM2H visa, or employment visa, or tourist visa.

It would seem to me that the actual marriage side is the easy bit. Staying in Malaysia (if you wanted to) could then be the hard bit.

Why not get married in the UK, then apply for FLR (further leave to remain) then ILR (indefinite leave to remain) and at least you'll get to stick together in a base in the UK? Just a suggestion.

regards, Scott

I think there is such a thing as a 'Spouse Visa' but it is only for a year renewable.

What is your thinking behind 'not going for MM2H'?

hi,

Yep, there is a Spouse Visa. There's 11 pages odd of a sticky post about it on alloexpat. Maybe a trip to Immigration for details (and clarity?) would be a 1st stop.

Interestingly there's a post about a marriage in the UK not being recognised in Malaysia, hence the spouse could keep quiet about it and apply for MM2H.

Guess hippygollum has a lot of reading to do. If you find out anything useful please post here. And if any other members could help out ...?

regards, Scott
