Renewal vs Extension
« on: February 19, 2009, 05:55:16 AM »
Does anybody know the answer to this?  When my current PP expires I will be able to apply for a 3 year extension since my original MM2H visa was granted for 7 years matching the years I had left on the current PP .  WHEN MY PP EXPIRES CAN I JUST SKIP THE 3 YEAR EXTENSION AND APPLY DIRECTLY FOR A 10 YEAR RENEWAL?  THIS WOULD SYNCHRONIZE BOTH ON THE SAME 10 YEAR CYCLE.  ANY THOUGHTS?...Jim, USA

Seems logical to me, but logic does not always prevail.

A good question for the lady at MoTour is it Cindy Lim??
The trouble with taking the ‘middle of the road’ position is that you get run over from both directions.

hi,

I once asked about changing my 5-year visa to the 10-year visa and was told that I would have to make a whole new application, and use the latest rules!

If you get anything from Cindy, please post.

regards, Scott

My understanding...and I did ask the question at Motour a few weeks ago... is that the visa is only issued and charged until the expiry of the current PP.

Canada only issues 5 years PP's so mine expires in 4 years. I was only charged for 4 years MM2H. It was issued in Jan 2010 and expires June 2013. They do charge annually and not monthly.

I was told that I need to bring my NEW PP and my OLD with the MM2H Visa, and pay for the new Visa to complete the 10 years, when applicable.

hi, haroldchow,

And welcome to the site.

Just to add to Davita's post.

Renewals are now for 10-years. This was introduced earlier last year.

So, as the mm2h staff have said, you need to renew your passport, and then get the 1 year remainder of your 5 year visa stamped into the new passport.

Allow plenty of time for this, don't leave it all to the last month or so.

You're right, later when you come to renew your visa you'll get 10-years.

Perhaps those members with direct experience of this will be able to post and assist.

Hello all,

Just to amplify Scott's last post, extensions granted when original 5 year visa was limited because of passport validity are also issued for up to 10 years from original issue date.

However the full ten years may still not be given in the case of a couple where one passport does not have enough time to run.

I expect this is quite common unless we make a deliberate attempt to synchronise passport dates. In the case of British passports we may apply up to 9 months in advance of expiry date with no penalty, giving 10 years and 9 months on the new passport.

For our personal experience see my post dated Nov 13 2009 in this section.

Best wishes,

Alistair

Does the renewal of the MM2H visa have to be completed before the expiration date on the visa or does MOT give you a window of time (say 6 months either way) to get the renewal completed?  Also, just became aware the 10 year US PP can be renewed anytime.  Was wondering if i renewed it now (4 years before it expires) would my current MM2H visa become null and void?  Just curious...Jim

hi, jr6020,

There has been a report of cases of mm2h visa holders paying a fine for late renewal. You need to renew at least 2 months before the expiry.

Last week I emailed MOT about skipping an Extension and instead apply for a Renewal to align my US PP and the MM2H visa on the same 10 year cycle.  Lai Shevren responded promptly that "participants will have to adhere to the initial 10 years before they are allowed to renew their MM2H visa for the next 10 years".  I guess there was no harm in asking  :( ...Jim

Dear all :
Sharing my recent experience from renewal, submitted all related documents (1/. letter of intended, 2/. IMM 55, 3/. Bank FD., 4/. passport, 5/. Medical insurance, 6/. and post back the Medical checkup form RBII.
to the putrajaya on 2010-06-07, and patiently waited for 3 days, then called several times to confirmed but the replied were still waiting the officer in -charge who was out town, in order to hurry caused I had a flight to catch on 2010-06-16, therefore I went up to Putrajaya without green light, and luckily they issued me 10 years visas by writing a temporary request letter where the head officer who authorized my request eventhough the officer who was responsible my case was not in.
The ladies who sit at the counter 9 and 10 for second home were mostly helpful.
cheers
