It pays to set up home here
MALAYSIA My Second Home (MM2H) is being repackaged to attract more big spenders and experts in various fields.

The new policies approved by the cabinet will allow participants in the programme to take on contract jobs and dabble in business and investment. Under the old MM2H, this was not permitted.

The changes, which come into force next month will apply to those above 50 and they will be allowed to work only in critical sectors for 20 hours per week.

Among the sectors MM2H participants can work in are health, biotechnology, science, engineering and the oil and gas industry.

"The cabinet has decided to allow MM2H participants to work in these sectors because Malaysia lacks expertise in these areas," an official told the New Straits Times.

The other guidelines in the programme remain the same, said the official

This is indeed a bit newsworthy.  Being a retired SCIENCE teacher I wonder if I could work as a substitute teacher under the new rules.  20 hours is about all I would ever want to put in per week anyway...Jim (jr6020)

Hi Jim

Its interesting to see that they use the word 'Among'

Among the sectors MM2H participants can work in are health, biotechnology, science, engineering and the oil and gas industry.

From the way I read it this may possibly indicate that the list of areas MM2H'ers could work is wider than the options listed in the article.

Cheers

Paul

hi,

I've made a new topic as this is a significant change. I really thought that any work proposal would be a non-starter given the current economic crisis.

20 hours per week and you've got to be over 50. Exact details to be announced.

The new policies approved by the cabinet will allow participants in the programme to take on contract jobs and dabble in business and investment.

Besides taking on contract jobs, MM2H participants will be allowed to do business and invest, a move aimed at stimulating the economy through foreign direct investment.

What this means is that MM2H applicants can run their own business, for example open a restaurant, or invest in various projects. They will, however, be subject to domestic regulations.

hi,

The NST article also says :

It is also understood that the MM2H programme will now be aimed at attracting quality applicants, but how this is to be done remains unclear at the moment.

Hmmmmmmm. Quality applicants. The financial requirements are already pretty onerous by the standards of regional countries (except Singapore). Educational/Professional/Entrepreneurial qualifications? Guess we have to wait and see.

Teaching In English: Why British teachers might be better

I REFER to the report, "It pays to set up home here" (NST, Jan 26) where it was stated that among the sectors "Malaysia My Second Home" (MM2H) participants can work in are health, biotechnology, science, engineering and the oil and gas industry.
Perhaps the conducting of courses on the teaching of English by retired teachers from Britain to our teachers of English could also be included in the critical list.

I have no intention of casting aspersions on the quality of our teachers, for whom I have the highest respect.

But the main impediment to our children becoming proficient in English has been our teachers of English themselves.

They are not adequately trained to the level of competency in the language skills to effectively pass on such skills in English (as opposed to "manglish" -- Malaysian English) to their pupils.
Retired teachers of English from Britain would be able to pass on proven practical skills on the teaching of English they had acquired during a lifetime of teaching in English schools.
The trouble with taking the ‘middle of the road’ position is that you get run over from both directions.

I agree. It would be great to have native speaking English teachers teaching English students. I have spoken to many children and am astonished to hear what they believe to be English. Many of these children have never spoken with an American before and enjoy talking with me, but their basic English skills are lacking. Many of them say they are taught English by Chinese or Japanese teachers, who did not learn from a native speaker. Many of the Japanese students learn grammar and vocabulary, but are told that conversation is not important. Their English is by far the worse. With so many Australians, British and Americans here, it is shame that their talents are not utilized.

hi,

Good idea. I'm still here in Singapore and the local councils (or community centres) run courses in conversational English. Maybe something similar could be started in Malaysia.

Well, i'm doing my bit........... we have a local family (friends of ours) who leave the 9 yr old daughter with us to learn english. She has been here maybe twice a week for a couple of months now & her reading skills have gone from "poor" to nearly perfect.
The next step will have to be conversation in english as she is poor at that at the moment.
She has always had what we call "Typical Malay english" which is not pronouncing the last letter of most words. This may be a "Langkawi thing" as the Malay accent here is different to mainland accent.
We think she enjoys her visits here as when she has done well we let her take an hour in the pool to cool off. ;)

hi,

That's great Rainbow. From my teaching experiences in Singapore, it's use of English in and around the home that makes a significant difference.

hi,

Thanks for the post, downtoearth, and welcome to the site.

There's a range of permissible areas in which my2homers can take-up part-time work. Maybe if any member has done this they can post their experiences.

My wife (ex-geography teacher at Secondary level) is planning on doing some 'supply work' at one of  the KL International Schools.
Not got approval yet. Will let you know more as this thing evolves.
