Thanks for the update and valuable info Brian.
It's a bit sad in a way :'(, but you have very good and logical reasons for doing it, and the FD locked away can be a real pain in the a55.

What is the situation with your car?  I am sure your experience on that score will be valuable to many of us.

Good Luck and have fun in Phuket. :D
The trouble with taking the ‘middle of the road’ position is that you get run over from both directions.

hi, Brian,

As FCS posted, many thanks for the update, and all the best for your future plans. Please keep in touch with the Forum, and I'm sure we would all welcome your continued posts. Let us all know about Oz.

Interesting that the comment was "quite a few" visa cancellations. Maybe with recent significant currency moves, and property price falls, folks are seeing and evaluating more opportunities elsewhere, as I am.

A 3-month visa for Singapore sequenced with a 3-month visa for Malaysia is attractive. With a home base in Australia or the UK, and cheaper air-fares, it's a different set of cards than a few years ago.

It's back to the Perpetual Tourist approach. Now if I could only finish off the boat (so far 9 years of loafing around) and get it back in the water ...?

regards, Scott

hi,

There's another point about the visa that I often forget. Although the mm2h visa is for 10 years (or 5 years as in my case) it is still a temporary visa which is renewable.  It was never intended as anything else.

Legally, I believe that there is no such thing as a permanent visa. For permanence anyone would need a permanent residency permit or citizenship.

PR eliminates the visa risk, but there is no link (or shortcut) between mm2h and PR. And, looking through the many posts on the alloexpat "Immigration Board" I can see that obtaining PR in Malaysia is a difficult, frustrating and lengthy process even if there was an interest in doing so.

regards, Scott

Hi,

Sorry for the delay in replying but lap top went kaput had to buy another one. The car situation is still pending as I did not have time to get it sorted. Will be back up in June. Nothing was mentioned about it during the "cancellation process" so they must not be linked. Will let you all know how it goes when I get around to it. One good thing about canceling now was that I earned about 9k pounds on the exchange rate from when I sent the money out (about 20k oz) not a bad return in 18 months. Although, of course, could have went the other way.

Cheers

Brian

Hi Guys,

Just to let you know that I have cancelled my visa. Not too bad in terms of time. Had a list of things to do from Cindy Lim. Arrived in KL on Monday took papers to PWTC on Tuesday morning and got letter of cancellation this morning. Went directly to Putrajaya to Immigration - about a two hour wait ( 3 times slower cancelling than joining) and got the letter of cancellation from them - down to HSBC by 3pm and out by 3.30 with dosh on way to my account in Australia. All in all pretty painless. I did ask did they have many cancellations and they said quite a few which was interesting.

As we are up this way going to pop over to Phuket for a week.

Cheers

Brian

After 5 years of having this visa, I plan to go to KL this coming Nov-Dec to cancell mine also. I assume the procedures are still as described by Brian (above)?

questions:
Do I have to post a letter to them first?
How can I contact Cindy via email?

Regards,
Tony

hi, bucklt,

Unfortunately Cindy Lim left MM2H sometime ago.

The current contact is the same as on the mm2h.gov.my site i.e. info@mm2h.gov.my but you'll wait long long for any reply. That's if you get a reply. I've had one email enquiry outstanding for several weeks.

Check out this for the Visa Cancellation procedure : HTGA : Exiting MM2H & Getting the FD Back

Best wishes Tony. Hearing from you on how the exit went would be interesting and useful, and a nice finality.

Greetings Scott.

Had my visa cancelled last week...no problems.

Immigration is now - literally - in the kiosk next to the MM2H kiosk...they all share the same office.

It was a difficult building to find. Important to get a taxi driver familiar with the area. It's one of a pair of twin buildings and has a small ''Tourism Malaysia'' sign on the very top.

Tony  :)

Hi all,

As someone wh0 is about to apply, and apart from the mandatory deposit, what are the perceived disadvantages in the MMy2H visa?  Even if one will only stay (say) for periods of less than 90 days?

I appreciate that the reasons for departing may have nothing to do with the visa itself - just being cautious.

Hi
I will allow Tony to reply but in the main the only disadvantage with retaining the MM2H visa is that you have MYR 150K permanently tied up. If you are not visiting Malaysia for substantial periods the 90 day visa is fine.

As a part timer here I have applied for MM2H for 2 reasons. The first is that having purchased a property I thought it was "sensible" to go the one step further and apply for MM2H but the main reason was to avoid the grilling that you can sometimes get when you only have a one way airfare out of Oz. No problems ever at the Malaysian or Singapore ends but you often get the third degree at Oz check in.
Cheers

I would see that as the only disadvantage, of course if you qualify for the visa on the 'offshore income / pension' criteria you don't need to have RM 150K tied up here.

Atilla,
Isn't the requirement nowadays that there should be both a FD AND an income?
At the time I applied the option was either one or the other, but I think this was changed some time ago.

Hi Gunnar, not quite, applicants will need to show proof of income at RM10K per month to get the visa.  Then, upon approval, applicants over 50:

* Can either choose to:
- Open a fixed deposit account of RM150,000.00 ; OR
- Show proof of government approved pension funds of RM10,000

So you need the income to qualify for the visa, but if you are over 50 AND the income is from govt approved pension funds, you don't need open an FD.  That is the criteria under which I applied and the basis on which my visa was issued  O0

OK thanks.  It seems to be as I thought.
My plan is to transition from FIFO to spending longer periods in MY and will probably buy property so the visa seems to me to have practical advantages.

Bon voyage, and all the best. Keep in touch with the forum, if you've got the time.    8-)

Last month a friend of mine asked MM2H to supply the figures on the number of my2homers exiting. The reply that the mate got was that they don't have the figures.

The only bit of stats on this was a few years ago and official stated around 40% but it's never been confirmed or re-stated.

hi,

I stayed in Malaysia for 8 years on the 90-Day Social visit Pass.

It got tedious, and I pulled the necessary cash together for MM2H.

So far I haven't come across a more easy-going alternative so I'll stay till I do, or don't.

Atilla has summed it up :

1). Everyone needs to show an offshore Support Income of RM10,000. This proves that you can support yourself in Malaysia.

2). You can choose to use the FD Option, or use the Pension Option with government approved funds.

It helps clarity to state under which option you're applying when you make the application

For those who have retired, they are required to show proof of receiving pension from government approved funds of RM 10,000 per month.

Obviously if you've retired and are getting RM10,000 in pension from government approved funds then you can use this same amount for both 1). Support Income, and 2). Pension Option.

My Xmas wish is for MM2H Central Command to cut one of these RM10,000 figures to RM9,999.    :-X
