Used car-insurance-license?
« on: August 30, 2008, 11:35:42 AM »
Hi all
We will be making the MM2H commitment but firstwe will have to sell / rent out properties in Oz.
In the interim what we were thinking of doing was the fairly common practice of coming over for 6-12 months (visa run every 3) and renting a condo (no problems there) and buying a used car to use during the stay (I am a mechanic so the Used part is not an issue).

I have three questions please.

1. Are there any problems with transferring a used car into my name if I only have a tourist visa? (I would have a Malaysian address before trying.)

2. Would I be able to get car insurance (only need third party) with a local address but only a tourist visa and an Australian drivers license?

3. Has anyone heard of any problems recently with visa run type entry, we would do a few days in Thailand or Singapore and would only need to do it 3 times. I have a British  passport my wife has an Australian one.

Any comments are welcome

Tom

Although your situation is unusual I don't think the tourist Visa thing would be an issue. Your passport may be required but only for 'identification' purposes. They wouldn't check the other pages. Same goes for Insurance as long as you have a local address.
Lots of people live here doing the Visa run. I think the only problem I am aware of is that at the S'pore end they sometime only give ONE month, but I believe that is only applicable to those who are 'regulars'!
The trouble with taking the ‘middle of the road’ position is that you get run over from both directions.

Hi,

I did it for 9 months before getting the MM2H visa and I was in and out like a yoyo as I work all over the Far East and China - never had a problem.

I do recall when renting the apartment  no one asked to see the visa ( as I did not have one). Just used it for indentification.

Can't help with the car thing as I kept my Singapore car until I had the visa and then bought a Honda under the MM2H scheme.

Cheers

Brian

I think the only problem I am aware of is that at the S'pore end they sometime only give ONE month ...

Last year Singapore increased the visa entry period for entries via the Causeway and 2nd Link. It was increased from 2 weeks to 1 month.

They also introduced online visa extensions so the 1 month can easily be extended a further month. You apply online and get an email response with the result in a matter of hours. This is a great service, no need to queue at immigration in Lavender.

regards, Scott
