Thanks Meek. Excellent job 8-)
The trouble with taking the ‘middle of the road’ position is that you get run over from both directions.

Thanks for all the info Fizzy, etc   --  the bit I don't see anywhere is :-

Importing a car OUTSIDE of the MM2H programme costs RM45,000 (I am told) - this is the price of the AP (approved permit).

The MM2H.gov.my site (as you quote, Fizzy) says :-
<<6.   Tax/Duty exempted motorcars which are subsequently sold or transferred will be subject to import duty, excise duty and sales tax according to the prevailing rates.>>

You have to wait 2 yrs before selling a car imported under MM2H. Can it be true that you have to pay (or the person you sell to has to pay) the tax (eg RM45k) belatedly at this point?

A big point, which my Agent cannot answer...

Hi Jimbob,

I am not sure I understand what you are getting at.

As far as I know the AP & excise duties are very different things.

When you sell your MM2H 'duty free' car, you will be eligible to pay any outstanding excise duty, which will be prorated according to the age of the car, and is determined by the Customs officer on the day in question! No on will give you a clue in advance of how much this may be!

The cost of an AP is a one off/non refundable cost as far as I am aware!

However there are many more knowledgeable people out there than me, and I stand to be corrected/better informed! :-\

Thanks Fizzy -- I am still mystified, and nothing produced by the Malaysian government is any help at all!

As far as I understand it, to import my 1964 Mercedes, I need to buy an AP for RM45,000 --- but, I am told, one is not required under MM2H --  so that's quite an incentive to join up !

On the other hand, it seems too good to be true that there will not be a clawback of the money that I have not paid - when I dispose of the car eventually in Malaysia.

As you point out - the .gov.my site says that tax and duty is due, at some arbitrary rate, upon re-sale - but no mention of AP-previously-unpaid. My agent doesn't know, and all posts suggest that RMCustoms don't reply to emails (and the MM2H.gov.my Inbox is full and not receiving....)

Nor does it seem as if anyone has ever imported their personal car..   Anyone?
