Who's going to the Dragon Boat Festival

Just read about the Dragon boat festival starting tomorrow in Penang. Over 10,000 visitors. Sounds like great fun. Anyone going?

I can find various refs to PIDBF (Penang International Dragon Boat Festival) being held at Telok Bahang Dam on 31 July for 3 days but no detail or timings. It seems not a well advertised event. I'll take a look tomorrow and if I get bored will have a walk in the Orang Asli park just below the dam. Maybe I'll wear my MM2H tee shirt so as to be instantly recognisable, if not I am the old git without a tan.

 I suppose being on a dam makes sense but I do have memories of a sunny day in Hong Kong watching dragon boat racing off Stanley.

I'm going up there this afternoon. Unfortunately I have never been to Hong Kong so missed out on the festival there.

It was great. Only arrived about 4pm and there were about a gazillion team members all swanning around, very serious and focussed on the task in hand. You could hear the drums as soon as you crested the reservoir. Weather was good with a nice breeze to keep the paddlers cool. Got talking the only non paddling Canadian on the plot. He seemed to be worried about just about everything, the humidity, the crime, middle eastern tourists, local food etc etc but a very nice guy nevertheless. Apparently his wife was competing and if she didnt win it would be like living with a bulldog chewing a wasp.

I have to say that the venue was excellent and the organisation seemed pretty good too. I of there tomorrow with camera and binos in hand. I have already fabricated a false press pass so should get in to hospitality no bother
