Emigration Insurance
« on: July 09, 2008, 12:43:15 AM »
I have been looking for travel insurance to cover our move to Malaysia and I cant find any. All the ones I have looked at assume you are resident in the UK and will be returning there. Most of the emigration ones nullify thier own policies by quoting the UK residency requirement in the small print. Cant use a Malaysian residency because they dont cover you if you are not a resident of Malaysia. STUMPED.

Any Ideas out there :-\

hi,

Is it possible to pay the air fares by, say VISA, and get free travel insurance?

I often get caught with proof of residency problems when dealing with bureaucracy. It's particularily irksome when needing proof of address, and often I'm either short-term renting or staying with family or friends. I usually end-up not bothering.

regards, Scott

Thanks Scott,

I have just managed to get the insurance with Direct Travel Insurance who are not particularly cheap (£54.80) for a single trip for 5 days, at least problem is now solved. Our free HSBC travel insurance was not valid because we were not returning to the UK which is the usual catch, I dont know if Visa would be the same.

The "no fixed abode" problem seems to occur quite often, I didnt realise how important it was to have a home. There isnt even any benefit in telling lies as it just invalidates your policy.

The good news is that we will be over in Penang in a few days. All the trials and tribulations over with.

Hi JJ,

I came across a short story on "The Perils of Migration" by Gwen Boswell which restores my optimism about the move to Penang.

Thanks for the good wishes, I am sure that good luck will be needed in the coming weeks.

Good short story

For sure if I was only allowed to give one piece of advice to anyone contemplating becoming a expat it would be -

"when you get to your country of choice avoided the gloom and doom mongers like the plague"

hi,

I'm still here in Lagos on the Algarve. I imagine I'm one of the local doom and gloomers. This can only be explained by the fact that after living for the past 12 years in Malaysia everywhere else that I've been seems like slumming it and paying a hell of a lot to do so.

You'll love Penang, and all of the other Malaysian towns. And if you don't, you'll love the fact that it's not costing you an arm and a leg to dislike it.

regards, Scott
