Perhaps we can use this thread to list and compare options.

As posted by Scott:-

AIG (the email for the guy that I dealt with is richard_ohh@yahoo.com.sg) and ask them to suggest a nearby clinic. They can phone for you and they can make sure that it's the RM30-RM50 simple medical form. Of course, sometimes urgency takes precedence over costs.

I'm only giving the name of this guy in order to assist as you'll be here soon (his handphone is 019-2252663, and office 03-20562038)). I haven't spoken with the guy for more than a year so let's hope he is still there (if you contact him, please just say you got his name from a website, rather than use my name)

He was helpful and he knows about my2home and the Ringgit Net policy, and the need for a "certified true copy."  I took out the Plan 1 (cheapest) option for coverage of up to RM50,000. I paid cash.

The Plan 1, Ringgit Net policy in March 2006 costs:
30-34     400
35-39     420
40-44     475
45-49     545
50-54     650
55-59     770
60-64     800

There's a RM10 stamp fee. The policy is guaranteed renewal without any linkage to investments or life/term insurance.

I suspect that most of the MM2h applicants will be over 60 years.  Therefore, any cost figures for those in categories 65+.  Paul

I think that in Malaysia there's a real problem getting medical insurance for folks above 60, hence the item on waiver in the my2home application conditions. I'm contacting a few insurance companies to ask about this.

Hi. I am 59 and having been researching  Medical Insurance Companies. There are many companies located outside of Malaysia that offer coverage for those 60+  and continuing coverage to 70 to 80. These offer coverage up to 5,000,000USD but the premiums are quite expensive and increase quite a bit with age. The best coverage I have found are with Kurnia and Prudential in Malaysia. The total amount of coverage is not in the millions of USD but I doubt you would need that much. You can apply up to and including age 70 and it is renewable I believe until at least 70 or 80 with both companies. However with Prudential there is no coverage for routine outpatient or preventive care or doctors visits. The premiums are much more reasonable and affordable. I don't know what we do if we live past 80 though.

Many thanks for the information Steve. A friend of mine (58 years) here in Malaysia had a heart attack. He managed to get to a nearby local government hospital. Fortunately he was still aware of things, and luckily had the required RM50 for the deposit for admittance. Note: always carry at least RM50.

He spent 2 days in a private room in the ICU with 24 hour supervision, and 3 days in a 4-person ward. During this time he was being pumped with the usual drugs, was connected to the sort of stuff usually seen in Grey's Anatomy, and was monitored via regular blood tests and ECG graphs.

The total cost for the ICU, ward, drugs, blood tests, ECG monitoring and initial prescription was RM680 which gives some perspective. Later follow-up treatment was done in Singapore via a private hospitalisation policy, if he'd had to pay himself there would have been another attack, and he told me that the emergency treatment here in Malaysia was first rate.

regards, Scott.

A very informative post Scott, and what a bargain. I think in so called developed countries that amount of modern drugs alone would have cost a lot more than RM680.
Loved your last sentence. Of course it is a fact that 50% of people don't survive a first heart attack, and another 50% (or thereabouts) of the survivors don't survive a second one...so cost of Private Care may not have been a problem for your friend :o
On a serious note it is a known fact that the older one gets the more medical care one needs, so living in Malaysia until your time is up could be a real problem for some.
An answer (but not for everyone) is to eat into your 'nest egg' in order to provide the care you need......but will 'the nest egg' last as long as you? Have to say I would rather spend my dosh on myself & family than leave it to ungrateful or unappreciative relatives.
If I only had myself to think about I would have a young full time nurse to take care of my needs (if you know what I mean) ;)

I have a few years to go yet before I reach 60, but it will be interesting to see what ING do at that time. If they don't cover me they won't be covering my wife and boys either :'(

Hai,

I am Rukitamo. I am Newbie to here.

I am moving US in November with my wife and 3 months old baby on H1. Could any of you give some information about the expenditure for a month for a family (Me, My wife and a baby) in Atlanta? Also how much I need to spend for insurance (General medical / Dental / Eye) that covers everybody in my family as my employer is not covering that.

Please give me an idea about the above mentioned things.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

hi, rukitamo,

You're on the wrong site as this is for folks moving to Malaysia, and you seem to be going to Atlanta, USA. And I think that I've responded to a very similar question on other forums.

You need to go to alloexpat.com and check into the forum for the USA, and post there.

Hi Scott end anybody else just looking for a simple basic insurance...

During my research I also landed on following page:

http://www.allianz.com.my/general/v2/www/pro_detail.cfm?ProductID=indCare

and was really surprised...

With Plan 4 (the cheapest), me (51) and my wife (26) would only have to pay
    RM 935
whereby AIG would cost us
    RM 1050

For sure this kind of low coverage insurance is useful only under the point of view to fulfill MM2H request.

It should not be seen as a suitable coverage, which in my case I still have in Germany - but on the other side, this insurance also costs a fortune (around 20.000 RM for two of us, but unlimited cover).

I am in contact with Richard from AIG and I am trying to find out whether there is a "full cover insurance" like in Germany availabe and how much this would cost. Any outcomes I will let you know.

Ciao

....and

Allianz is also offering a "Supershield 2" which looks like a kind of risk life insurance combined with a very small part of health insurance. I'm only not sure, whether:
a) they would sell to MM2H participants
     -----------------
     Who Are Eligible ?

Your age should be between 30 days and 65 years.  Renewal is up to 70 years old.
All Malaysians, Malaysian Permanent Residents, Work Permits Holders, Pass Holders
or otherwise legally employed in Malaysia and/or their spouses/children who are legally
     residing in Malaysia.
     ------------------
b) MoTour would except this insurance

The cheapest premium would only be RM88 per year! For a life insurance of RM50.000 and medical expenses of RM3.500

But just to cover MM2H request....?

The link is: http://www.allianz.com.my/general/v2/www/pro_detail.cfm?ProductID=indShield2

hi, Udoc,

Thanks for the post. For purposes of MM2H only then RM88 is a great offer, especially if you have extensive coverage elsewhere. However, I would have thought that some additional ample coverage was necessary for Malaysia for the time prior to repatriation.

Hi Again.
It has been a long time since I posted here. My move to Malaysia was held up by the housing crisis in the US and I am finally selling my home and planning to move in July. I was planning on applying to Kurnia for my health insurance, as it was to me the best and most economical plan. I have been trying to find their medical insurance website, but apparently it doesn't exist anymore. Does anyone know what happened to it? Also has anyone found any companies that offer affordable health insurance for people over 60? Thanks, Steve.
