That's great.  I've been wondering about that eatery No Eyed Deer.  Looks good especially the Laotian Laksa.

I was in Penang last week and tried the second one down on your blog, Blue Reef.  Really good food and a very nice atmosphere.  The atmosphere reminded me of a French bistro - just really good unpretentious fresh food, polite service, and lots of hustle and bustle about the place - and good prices.  I had their Pasta Aglio Olio (I think that's what it was called) and two lunchtimes I had their salmonburger - a bit big for lunchtime but very nice - and I don't seem to have put on any weight from the trip, so I guess it's healthy food.

Think I might be bumping into you Kevin after we've moved in August.  I'll look out for a guy with a camera I guess  ;)

In case anyone is interested, the Laotian Laksa is fab but wish I hadn't jumped on the scales this morning - ouch.  Keeping a lookout for the man with the camera but not spotted him yet  ;)

What piled on the pounds?

I gained 7kg whilst on my 5 week UK vacation.

How did that happen?

Were here are some of the culprits:-

Big pork pies with lots of good fillings and jelly!
  Large gammon steaks & chips
Loads of good quality fresh fish & chips
Bags & bags of delicious pork scratchings, and tasty potato crisps
Wedges   of Gambazola cheese many types of good pate & french bread sticks   washed down with litres of good quality inexpensive wine!
Gallons of good beer at 1 quid fifty pence a pint (happy hour)!
At lease 3 fresh cream cakes per day.
Scones with strawberry jam & lashing of clotted cream.

Just to name a few:-

Who said Malaysia was the best for food? :-\
The trouble with taking the ‘middle of the road’ position is that you get run over from both directions.

Fizzy, 7 kilos is a lot  :(  But don't you find that you just want this kind of "comfort food" now again, then get back to curries n noodles?

Talking of British grub, we found an interesting little mini-market in the back streets of Tg Bungah.  The very friendly proprietor has been giving us the hard sell on his sausages, so we finally bought a pack of his Lincolnshire sausages and, crikey, it was like being transported back in time.  I've not tasted sausages like these for about 30 years - probably very bad for you, but who cares.

Lincolnshire sausages

I saw those gonna take them next time. The plain pork sausages were not so good.
His bacon is nice though. ;)

Well, this camera man will only turn up at around 6.30pm  to 7pm. Hehe! You should go at lunch time on Weekend to try the " Vietnamese Beef Pho" or Beef Noodles

You should ask the owner to call me! The owner name "Ken". Chinese guy with specs!

Bacon - now you're talking  O0  I guess we are talking about the same mini market??  Mind you, cannot be too many mini markets doing homemade Lincolnshire sosej I reckon.

Kevin - we'll keep an eye out for you and that other guy that goes there  ;)

Food..... Is there a more important topic

Just had to mention the quintessentail Panang breakfast I enjoyed the other day in Teluk Behang.

Just past the market (on your left as you drive from BF) is a corner coffee shop (corrugated iron overhang is probably a more apt description) that does roti chanai and great coffee. Watching this guy roll out the fresh roti and cook it on the hot plate before your eyes is a real treat. Being in Teluk Behang it is relatively quiet. If you close your eyes and forget about the cars you can imagine Penang as it was many years ago.

I know that there are many other roti sellers who all do a great dish but for some reason (mainly the surrounds I think) I will definitely revisit.

cheers

It's on the cut through from Tg Bungah to Tg Bungah hillside, on Jalan Loh Poh Heng.  See here

http://maps.google.com.sg/maps?hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=9CS&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&biw=1366&bih=641&q=loh+poh+heng+penang&gs_upl=37139l41684l0l42099l17l15l1l0l0l11l1527l7417l1.0.2.5.2.1.1.1.1l15l0&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.,cf.osb&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=0x304ac2c5ee31d7b5:0x93a9fdcbe0dbd821,Jalan+Loh+Poh+Heng,+Tanjong+Bungah,+Penang,+Malaysia&gl=sg&ei=YYYWT9jSC4zMrQef29E5&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=image&resnum=1&ved=0CCEQ8gEwAA

The last Cumberland ones I had weren't that great, a bit too fatty.  I think someone's lost the recipe, but the Lincolnshire ones are still fab, as is the bacon.  It's a bit of a treasure trove of a shop and the owner Andrew is a real character.

Hi Papaya,
Thanks!
Talking about food, I used to buy my chilled beef (australian or NZ tenderloin and topside) from Pok Brothers who used to be next to Ingolfs Kneipe.
Sadly they have now moved all the way out to Bayan Lepas Area!

Hi
the attached link is to the Melbourne Age where they discuss the history of English fish and chips and give their best of list.

I thought it might bring back fond memories for some. Personally I recall the fish and chips at Whitby as being rather good. For those who fancy themselves as connoiseurs of the dish may I put in a favourable mention for the South Island of New Zealand where one orders "fush and chups"  :)

On Jalan Kelawei 87D, just past Gurney Plaza on the right hand side if you come from Tanjung Bungah there is a good butcher. Bought some really nice steaks we BBQ-ed the other day.
They plan to move also, but fortunately not to far. New location should be around New World Park. PM me if you want the owners phone number.

I've sampled a few fush n chups around Penang and have to say that the best one that I liked was at No Eyed Deer in Prima Tanjung.  They do their own very light batter.  Just a pity that malt vinegar not available.  And possibly best not visited at the weekend unless you like screaming kids running about.
