"In defence of Scottish food I must confess that one of my most memorable meals was in Edinburgh"  - probably based on French Cuisine??  :D
Just a thought - "Fusion" cuisine (concept of which originated in the 1980s in Europe & UK)  must actually have originated in Scotland between Scots and French due to the Auld Alliance -  perhaps!   :D ;)
"I must also confess to enjoying the hagis on the one occasion on which I found it on the menu"   If you ever come to Edinburgh I will cook you Haggis: It's easy - but you have to know which Butcher to go to.  Haggis mainly appears on the Menu for Pub Grub (mainly a winter dish) - or in finer dining Restaurants when they usually do a frenchified twist to it (true).   Around Burns Night the City is awash with Haggi (along with Atholl Brose and Cranachan):  This year the Snow Ploughs probably got rid of the last of it!

We are going there tonight, I will let you know.
The food was nice we had Cold Tomato soup with lemongrass, Herb and Vinegar Chicken with French gratin potatoes, Gateau au chocolat. I liked the chocolate desert best.
The food was cooked by the vice president of the IWA who is actually Swiss if I remember correct. (Besides the food there was a lot of wine ;))
I think there were about 40 people siting outside at big tables. There was a lot of mingling and mixing so it's a nice way to meet some new people, talk to people you haven't seen for a while or just sit with a group of friends. Definitely something I'm going to do again. Do also screen a French movie every month.

We are "more civilised" than you think !   ;)
The Scots have had many connections with France dating from 1295 - in particular the famous "Auld Alliance" (military, commercial, culture and language).    De Gaulle described the alliance between Scotland and France as "the oldest alliance in the world”. In 1995, celebrations were held in both countries to celebrate the 700th anniversary of the beginning of the alliance.   The original Alliance that granted dual citizenship in both countries was eventually revoked by the French government in 1903 – as a result the Scots close connections with France have faded into distant memory – but there still seems to be a particular liking within the “upper echelons” for Claret.    ~2~

p.s. Dot is in Phuket.  In UK just now for family celebrations.  Have told her you are still there.

English history is a little fuzzy to me but I thought that the French invaded England and most of the "original English" skedaddled off to Wales and Scotland, back in the bowels of history.  So, hey, you might really be English  :D  Me, I'm resigned to the fact that there is an infinitely small amount of French in me dating back to the ninth century.

Dot?  Don't know anyone called Dot - sorry must dash.

Sounds really good.  Did they have beer too? What about parking?  Many different nationalities or predominantly French? (Not that it really matters but just wondered.)  I wonder if there's some other particular nationalities doing stuff like this.

No beer (or bring your own), I cooked a Dutch meal for a couple of people at the Blue Reef the other day don't know if that counts. I think there is a German society, no idea if they do something like this, but there is always Ingolfs if you are craving for Eisbein and sauerkraut.
Next upcoming event is St. Patricks day, the Irish society is organising a posh dinner at the Rasa Sayang.

~2~ Bia Hoi superb local draft beer in Viet Nam available in all towns and small villages. Nha Trang has great street side Bia Hoi mini cafe on Hung Vuong with San Miguel on draft 1 lit jug is about $1 us. Penang well it has to be Anchor Strong if available if not Anchor Smooth their taste and body to me well above comparison to either Asian Tiger or Eu Heinekin. Whisky well it can only be Irish Bushmills or Jameson both triple distilled not like some other liquids in the UK only have double distilled coloured liquids. I'm joking of course so not threats please every man or woman to their choice. We may have the oldest licensed distillery in the world here in Bushmills but neither we or the Scots invented whiskey some of our ancient Irish ancestors who travelled to the middle east brought back to Ireland the secrets of whiskey making then we introduced the Scot's to the water of life!

~2~ Dangerous word "Perfection" perhaps only used by Politicians, hey what odds as long as you enjoy your drink responsibly who cares! Just about to pour a Bushmills Single Malt no peat no perfection just a bloody good amber nectar.
