Hi JJ,

Theres lots of good things about the club most of which I dont take advantage of,

They teach and operate sailing, scuba, tai chi, chi kung, dancesport, gym, swimming, fishing (coast and offshore) and lots of other stuff.

The charges are amazing once you are a member. Its great for the kids with all the activities. Its the cheapest place to get good food and drinks are the best value anywhere around.

They have a lot of affiliated clubs in US, Canada, Australia, UK, Hong Kong that you can attend when out of Malaysia.

The RM40 is your monthly subs for first member, about RM70 for a couple.

Should you move away you get most of your money back (less the RM6k)

But would we want you as a member ::)

Don't just cut and paste, say what you think!

26,000 RM

Thats £5000

It would have to be a doozy of a club for me to want to pay that - I must be missing something as well

JJ

Yeeesh I'm with you on this one JJ.  Maybe I've got some Scottish in me after all.  I was thinking RM 40 a month was reasonable considering the reduced cost of food and drinks but 60K, forget it.

And pseudo-freemasonry / colonial shenanigans - oh dear.

A lot of people see the high membership fee as an investment, when you are not interested anymore you can sell it to a new member.
I'm not a member yet (definitely contemplating it) but have been invited to the club a few times. I like the atmosphere and as Qjumper said the activities on offer are quite interesting. There is some decent restaurants at very fair prices.

Well I am a 100% outsider so I am in not a real position to comment

On the surface it seem a large 'investment' and would like to know what guarantees I would get it back after I want to leave.  Seems there are more people trying to sell than there is wanting to buy as there is a list of people waiting to sell

£5000 buys a awful lot of food and drinks at the price difference between inside and outside of the club.  80% of the activities mentioned have little appeal to me personally

How ever I do understand that for some people the idea of being a club member gives a safety blanket sort of feeling (this remark is not aimed at anyone on here as I have not met any of you yet)  It is just what I have experience in other places in the world

I may have a different view after being invited to the club a few times.  This is a forgone conclusion as there is always someone that wants to use the words "let me invite you to my club"

Its a pity that the club online magazine has not been updated for such a long time and in one of the articals written by the president he is giving the membership a bit of a kicking and also dealing with the complaints of how many guests are using all the facilities

It looks a sound like a nice place - but just not convinced on the money and etiquette side of things

Bottoms up

JJ

If the "market rate" for the membership fee has gone down considerably and, from comments on here, that seems to be the case, then it isn't such a good investment.  I can understand people forking out all this money if they are going to use all or most of the said facilities (or their friends or families are going to use the facilities) and they've got a huge amount of disposable income and no debts.... but

For me personally, I'd only be interested in the eateries and bars (condo facilities will have everything I need) and clearly you're not going to recoup the cost of the membership fee however many times you eat and drink there.  In fact it would work out to be the Mother of all Restaurant bills I would think.  So, wouldn't be suitable for me.

And it does sound suspiciously masonic to me  ~38~

hi,

And it does sound suspiciously masonic to me  ~38~

Going totally off-topic but . . . I once was part of the architectural design team for a new masonic lodge. Not being a mason, I wasn't allowed to put the names of any rooms on the plans, or to even know about them. It was difficult designing something without knowing how it was being used.  The senior partner of the firm, who was a mason, would come in every day or so and say, "that needs to be bigger" or "that room needs 4 doors."  We all had great fun, and the design took ages but were being paid so . . .   8-)

Back on topic  ;)  I have to confess this topic has been bothering me over the weekend (I know, sad person) but I guess it's because I just don't understand the ins and outs of the PSC and maybe I've got things to learn here (and never a good idea to post about something you don't really know about).  Re-reading my last posting, it sounds like a major rant so just to offer apologies to PSC members QJ and BB  :'(  Maybe I've had too much sun, or "move stress" more likely.

Neither me or Mr P have any involvement in masonry but one of my closest relatives is well into it - an ex Lodge master - so we do get a lot of "exposure" to it and a continual plea to join up.  He tells me it's all very open now and you can talk about it - me, no idea.

I was googling around at the weekend and read that Francis Light (modern founder of Penang) was the guy that brought freemasonry into Penang.  There's quite a lot of freemason history around Georgetown apparently - and that part of it I find quite interesting.  But this probably belongs in the new Historic section of the forum I guess.

Ooo, I must have missed this at the time I was in Canada. No worries Papaya  :)
Last Saturday went with neighbors from Sing for lunch. The food was good esp the chicken curry Kapitan and others too. Had it a few times since this caterer returned and it was awful, but last Saturday the food was like they got the old cook back (when they were over at the old section). I hope it's not just good for that busy Sat lunch. If they keep it up I'll be there more!!  :P
(But, forget about the Western, it's not really 'western')
