Clubs & Society's
« on: April 03, 2008, 05:55:46 PM »
If any of our members belong to the Penang Heritage Trust could they let me know a bit about what goes on. Is it active, what kinds of projects are undertaken and how much do members get involved? I have looked at the website but it would be nice to get a members view.

It would be nice to know what other clubs and society's are our members incolved with throughout Malaysia.

Many thanks

Bob

Hi Bob,

I joined PHT shortly after I moved to Penang. They have fairly regular site visits for members - e.g. to the newly restored court buildings last Sunday. The website contains details of previous site visits. There are also occasional talks in their Church Street premises.

The Trust objectives are stated on their website but it has been involved in the bid to have the historical heart of Georgetown recognised as a World Heritage site. It has also been campaigning against PGCC.

Why don't you pop into their office for a chat? That's what I did.

Bill

Hi Bill,

Thanks for the reply. At the moment I am in the UK but at soonest available opportunity I shall pay them a visit.

What progress has been made with the PGCC, is it still set to continue?

Regards

Bob

Actually I will be swimming at the Penang Club. It is so exclusive that it is not even possible to view the website these days. All the bigshots hang out here so I will make it my home from home.

We dont talk about membership fees but if you need to ask you can't afford it. Penang Swimming Club is a mere public swimming baths compared to PC ;)

If you are a member of Penang Swimming Baths I'll pop down someday for tiffin and a visit.

Regards

Bob

Hi All

What clubs do you belong to? I think all expats should belong to a club or two from this list. (Terms in brackets are for Australian members)

Penang Rifle Club (the gunny)
Penang Swimming Club (the washy)
The Marina Club (the boaty)
Crystal Golf & Country Club, Penang (the golfy)
Penang Heritage Trust (the dusty)
Penang Club (the poshy)
The Curry Club (the noshy)
Penang Sports Club (the sporty)
Rasa Sayang (the pub)

I learned some of the lingo whilst attached to RAAF, an interesting and somewhat hazardous experience. God bless Australia.

Regards

Hi Bob,

The new Penang state government is reviewing the PGCC project. I'm hoping it won't go ahead - or at least will be substantially reduced in size.

Bill

My Wife and I are considering applying for membership to the Royal Selangor Club, does anyone have any experience of this club?

We want to join a good quality sports and social club close to KLCC as this is where we live. If you can suggest any alternatives to the RSC then we would be grateful for the information.

We don't want to be spending a huge wad of money and don't mind if its with or without golf. The most important bits we want are a gym, pool and social facilities.

Thanks

We are not members of any, but have friend who are members of a variety:

Lake Club - not rated by many.

Bukit Kiara Club, probably the best if you have younger kids. Good pool & a driving range amongst a variety of other facilities.

Selangor Club. I have a number of friend who are members & rate it highly. Main Club adjacent to Merdeka Sq and the annex over at Kiara. Both have good food selections, and the beverages are very reasonably priced. They have a golf section (for members only) and have regular outings at very reasonable prices. The pool at Kiara is not large but is still used a lot.

Another one is The Bankers Club (very close to Times Square) but this is more of a dining club (not cheap) in very pleasant surroundings. They also have a golf section, with monthly games which are not restricted to membership.

I am sure there are many other Clubs which I am not aware of, but these are key ones.

My advice would be to pop along to each and have a look.

I believe you will need a sponsor in order to join. The process for the RSC is quite amusing, and is clearly a throw back from the Colonial days! ::)
The trouble with taking the ‘middle of the road’ position is that you get run over from both directions.

Hi Paul,

You will not have any difficulty in getting sponsorship as I know you have some pretty influential contacts and I know they are all good "chaps", cant see you getting blackballed either.

A big advantage of being a member of RSC (apart from the occasional performance of Hamlet) is that it is affilliated to many clubs worldwide. So you become a visiting member of all these clubs:

My apologies in advance but O boy what an interesting list of places for the chaps to meet. It reminds me of the days when I would go to Clubs and sit at the communal dining tables. Just like being back at School for most of those present right down to the bad food. Of course no Ladies other than by special invitation and in a separate room. ::)

Perhaps they have changed in this century.

Thanks Bob

I planning to pop down to the club today or tomorrow to check it out with Natasha, however she will have to wait outside when I go into the Mens Only 'Long Bar'!

If I joined I can even accompany the both of you at your super new club in Penang! - How does that work? can I just show my membership and stroll in or would I have to do some large scale paying and fancy hoop jumping?

Cheers

Paul

Hi Paul & Donohue,

I think the dinners have improved and now there are hot showers. Ladies are allowed even at the Carlton Club but they have wear a tie from a "Good Regiment". Paul there could be some question mark over your ex Regiment. As mine was originally cavalry I am very pukka. No VSO's and NGO's please.

As a visiting member you have access to the club without needing a member to sign you in but may need to check with your secretary to see if advance notice is required. This is so that adequate supplies of G&T can be made available.

Chin Chin,

Bob

Hi Donohue,

Sounds more like the masons. The only funny hat was for my NBC suit.
