Insurance for belongings
« on: January 08, 2008, 12:42:25 AM »
We are moving out to Kl on MM2H in late February.  When we  leave Spain most of our belongings are going into store until we have a rental house, then they will be shipped over.  I guess we might be 'homeless' living in hotels or serviced apartmenst for 6 or 8 weeks or so.

In this interim period of 6-8 weeks how can we insure our belongings that we have brought over?  Has anyone experience of this sort of situation?

Can we take contents insurance through a Malaysian Insurance company even though we do not have a permanent home as in the UK you could not?  Or is there some other type of insurance available?

Travel insurance is no good  as we have sold up to move to KL , so cannot be deemd a resident of either the UK or Spain.......This has been confirmed by various companies.  The best I can do on this front is to take a single trip travel policy for the journey but this would expire 48hrs after reaching our destination.

Any ideas or help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi,

No doubt you will be aware that furniture etc sent from Europe can take up to 12 weeks ( or even longer) to get to the Far East. Perhaps you would be better off sending out your stuff before you leave as you may find staying in serviced/short term accommodation is expensive. At least then when you do find permanent accommodation you will have your stuff already there or nearly there.

Can't help with the insurance not sure how you would go about this. However, in terms of accommodation you might want to have a look at accommodationinmalaysia.com. We stayed in this apartment for 6 weeks when we first arrived while we were looking for something more permanent. It is a great place and you can "negotiate" a price for longer stays. Not sure it would be vacant when you want it but might be worth a try. The guy who owns it is an Aussie and his name is Peter.

Cheers

Brian

Thanks for this.  Unfortunately Pickfords can only send on all our stuff once we can give them a 'permanent' address.  We cannot just say send it all to malaysia nd we will make sure you have a delivery address before it arrives - its the customs paperwork apparently.  So we must wait to get our temporary home and then wait again  for everything to arrive.

I also tried that web link you mention but it comes back as 'page under construction'

Guess we will have to start looking for a tempoary home as soon as we arrive in KL. Do you have any agnets or sources you might recommend?

Hi,

The chap whose name I gave you - his email address is info@accommodationinmalaysia.com. What we did was look around while we stayed in his place and found "our bearings". We were lucky in some respects as I knew KL quite well as I had been visiting there since 1990 on work assignments. I also have a good friend there who is local.

To cut a long story short we eventually decided to take an apartment in the same development we were renting the short term accommodation. It is called the Maple Condominium. I am sure you will be able to find it on the web. It really is a great place - about 15 minutes from KL City Centre ( depending on traffic) and overlooking a "private park" for Maple residents only - it was an old Golf Course. We rent a Type A apartment which is 1750 sq feet with a large balcony overlooking the park and Twin Towers. The fit out is excellent but no doubt this will differ depending on how much the owner has invested in fittings. The going rate at present is around RM4500 -5000 per month. It is ideal for us as security there is first class and we are away for long periods of time. Indeed, probably half of the year!!

With your furniture - we also used Pickfords from the UK. Ours went originally to Singapore where I was going to be based. I gave them my office address and then changed it when we found an apartment there.

I am in Australia at present and I will be back in KL after a visit to Hong Kong next week. I will look up the name of the agent we used and pass it on to you. However, in saying this the Star paper advertises a large number of rentals every day- not just apartments but town houses and villas as well so there should be no problem finding something that suites. If you let me know what you have in mind perhaps I can point you in the right direction in terms of the best areas.

Cheers

Brian
