« on: September 27, 2007, 07:54:17 PM »
Can anyone share any knowledge on employing people in Malaysia

Information about the following would be useful

Employing direct - - what government paperwork needs to be done and do you need to pay any sort of tax or fee to the government

Minimum wage

Average wages of say a maid or driver

Is it easy to find staff on a full time basis or part time

How would you go about it

Contracts of employment?

Using agency's

2 or 3 expats getting together and  employing a maid between them

Anything else

(Scott do you have any idea about employing crew)

Cheers all

JJ

Hi JJ,

I wish to share the following information with you:

Employing direct - - what government paperwork needs to be done and do you need to pay any sort of tax or fee to the government

If you are employing locals, you do not need to pay any tax or fee to the government. However you need to submit returns to the Ministry of Human Resources and pay Employment Provident Funds and SOCSO.

If you are employing foreigners you need approval from the immigration department and you also need to pay yearly levy.

Minimum wage
Malaysia government do not enforce any law on minimum wage.

Average wages of say a maid or driver
Almost impossible to get a local house maid. Average pay for driver (in KL) RM1,500 a month.
Minimum salary for Indonesian house maid RM500 per month. This minimum wage is enforced by Indonesia government, through its embassy in Malaysia.

Is it easy to find staff on a full time basis or part time
Depending on what type of job. Generally not easy to get staff, whether part time or full time. That's why there are more than 2 million foreign workers in Malaysia.

How would you go about it
You may advertise in the papers, through agency or word of mouth. Mention your need to your local sundry shops, kopitiam etc, and you may get some response.

You may also register your needs with the ministry of human resources. The website is :

http://www.mohr.gov.my/

Contracts of employment?
Go to the bookshop and you will find some good books on this.

Using agency's
The list of agencies can be found at the Ministry of Human Resources web site.

2 or 3 expats getting together and  employing a maid between them.
If you are hiring foreign domestic maid, she is supposed to be working only with you. It is an offense to share the maid. If you are hiring locals, you can try to hire on hourly basis, but hard to find any.

Hope the above is of help to you.

Warmest regards,
MM2H Agent
