Leisure, hobbies and pastimes

Maybe if this grows we can have a new section for this

One of the reasons I am looking to become a M2Her is to allow me more time to do all the things that I do not have time to do now or I am in the wrong location

I would appreciate if any board member has any experience of diving on the east side and/or experiences of what to get up to on the east side, costs, best why to get there etc.

Also what do other member s get up to in their leisure time that is made easier by living in Malaysia/Asia

Cheers

JJ

Diving is certainly possible on the East side. Several very good sites. But not all year round as it is not possible during the monsoon season.
Golfing is a great pursuit in Malaysia at a fraction of European prices (or Phuket for that matter!)
Hiking is also a great way to see the locale and get some exercise...best done in the cool of the early morning or short hike in the last hour or two of the day.
I am a keen golfer & cyclist (both mountain biking and road riding) so I can utilise quite a few hours on these hobbies/sports!
The trouble with taking the ‘middle of the road’ position is that you get run over from both directions.

hi,

I've noticed quite a few PADI diving companies advertising.

For diving it seems to be Sipandan in Sabah that is always mentioned. Although the hostage problems of a couple of years ago are still fresh, and the waters off NE Borneo are a known pirate zone.

You could buy a sailing/motor boat. There are plenty around, and they're at bargain prices compared to Australia, UK, USA etc. And the cost for berthing at marinas is generally low. This is due to most of them being on the verge of financially sinking.

In fact, the original marina in Penang to the north of the ferry terminal did sink about 6 years ago - washed away by the tides. There's now a new municipal marina that is so silted-up that only a few shallow, shallow draft boats can get in.

Well, cheap to buy but if, like me, you choose to rebuild then it's Davy Jones locker for your cash. It's more of a white elephant than a hobby or pastime. But good fun nonetheless.

regards, Scott

Scott

You have touched on something here that brings a smile to face

I am so looking forward to buying a small Motor yacht and doing some exploring and diving of my own boat

Looking for about a 25 footer, single mast inboard engine sleeps 2 comfortably 4 at push. Good sized deck space

Looking to spend up to £25,000

Is there some good stuff available at that price for that size do you know (PS start/open a yachting thread if you like)

What sizr boat do you have and what are the mooring/berthing fees please

Anyone else dabbled in boats in Malaysia

Cheers

hi, JJ,

There's already a thread on this board. It's called "Building a Boat" so let's use it for boating/yachting. I'll post some answers to your boating questions there.

Then we can keep this thread more general.
