I'm visiting Penang in October - anyone want to meet?
« on: September 15, 2007, 05:00:22 PM »
I'll be in Penang from 4 to 18 October, staying at the Evergreen Laurel Hotel.

I'll be looking at schools, accommodation etc before I move out there in December with my family from the UK.

I'd love to meet any forum members living in Penang.

Please pm me if you're interested.

Thanks,

John B

Although I live in KL, we do visit Penang from time to time. I have a very busy 'Autumn' schedule with a rugby trip to Japan with my youngest, and then a trip to Phuket on a golfing tour, so at the moment I'm not sure when I will be popping in to Penang.

Good to know that a few 'forumers' are willing to meet up, and will be happy to share a beer or two in the not too distant future.

hi, John B,

I'm still in Singapore but plan to get back to Perak at the end of the month and will then think about Penang. If I can get up there before the 18th October I'll let you know.

regards, Scott

Hi John B

As it happens we live very close to the Evergreen Hotel, a 5 min walk at most. I spend most of my time in Jakarta but I will probably be in Penang the weekend of the 5th Oct.  How do I pm you?

Hi tombo,

Just click on that little 'voice bubble' like thing under his name.

If you put your cursor over it is should say "Personal Message"

Click it and away you go!

We arrived in Penang a couple of days ago and sorted out my FDs without any hassle with HSBC. Indee they are a dam site more organised than HSBC UK. We now have a relationship manager who really on the ball. Did my FDs as 60K and 90K to ease house purchase later on.

Sorted medical out at Adventist hospital who did a thorough medical on thier MM2h package. This includes chest xrays, blood tests (complex) and full physical inc eye test , hearing etc etc. The total is RM200.50 per person which I think is good value. Service and facilities were great. When I mentioned the RM30 medical that has been talked about on this forum they all laughed and said it must be with a dodgy doctor. I agree, how could you get anything for RM30?

If anyone has managed to get internet banking working with HSBC Malaysia or Global View with HSBC UK can they let me know. It's all beyond me as the several ID numbers, Passwords, Pins etc etc change everytime I log in and the security device number only ever worked once.

Any I'm off to soak up some rain and have a beer.\

See you all

Bob

Hi Bob,

I'll be back in Penang on 7th December with my family. Still awaiting the result of my visa appeal, but we're still coming anyway... We'll probably stay in the Gurney Drive area while we look for an apartment to rent there.

I got Yee Ling Sha as account manager at HSBC Downing Street - is that the lady you dealt with? My security dongle seems to work OK and I even got global view working after a bit of trial and error, but I couldn't explain how without having you next to me in front of the PC!

Thanks for the useful medical info. When will you move to Penang full-time?

Hi Bob,

It is not that the 30RM got you a dodgy doctor but as Scott pointed out all you need is the bit of paper for the Visa. I can assure you that a "proper" medical even in Malaysia will cost you RM1000+ not RM200.

Cheers

Brian

hi, Bob,

Getting a doctor to fill-in the Medical Form is about RM30. You're not paying for a medical exam, you're paying for completing the form with some ticks, a signature and a stamp.

Chest x-rays and blood tests aren't needed for MM2H but then if you make use of the opportunity to get something meaningful that's a different choice.

regards, Scott

Bob I have been using Internet Banking with HSBC, and after they introduced the security device it worked perfectly from day one.
I can get "global view" with  HSBC offshore or via HSBC Sdn Bhd without any hassle. As John states, it is difficult to help or advise without knowing your specific situation. I suggest you ask your Relationship Manager to help. After all that is one of their functions.

Enjoy Penang.
