Hi Scott,

wouldn't you expect raised eyebrows and probing questions (or rather, a request for proof that the money is legitimate) if you walked into a bank in Singapore with say, 200K Euros in cash to open an account?

Regards,

Karsten

hi,

Yep, I'd expect a question about origin but in a derisory sort of way. The answer is the sale of property and I'd be able to show proof (including a photo and for sale notice). There would also be the bank deposit/withdrawal slips.

A few years ago a Malaysian politician/businessman got stopped when arriving at an Aussie airport with a suitcase full of cash, and no proof.

I think that the MAS would want some sort of proof for larger amounts. However, I don't think that banks here, or anywhere else, are over fussy. Maybe you just have to tick a box.

This money looks ill-gotten.
Did it come from (please underline one or more) :

Stocks and Shares
Investments
Property Sale
Inheritance
Laundering
Sub-Prime Mortgages
Banking Bonus

What scared me off was the lack of big notes, and being asked, in Portugese, for an explanation by Portugese customs officers. My place in Portugal was just up the road from the local police station and if the customs officers are as equally low paid and cavalier as the police then the less contact the better.

So I didn't fancy being pulled out of the line and hanging around for a couple of hours, missing the flight etc. Questions by any Portugese officials are usually attached to masses of paperwork.

I wasn't worried about the UK to Singapore bit. If it had been a UK property I'd have followed Brian's method, which I thought was great advice. I have the customs form with me so I'll post it here as soon as I get it scanned.

Singapore has S$10,000 notes.  Now that's a handy amount for discreet transport.   ::)

regards, Scott
