Short term Rental Apartments in Malaysia
« on: July 19, 2010, 10:02:54 AM »
Thought it may be of use to start a thread as per the title where posters can comment on places they have stayed at other than hotels.

Recently I had the pleasure of staying in Penang Times Square for a few weeks and will gladly stay again when I have the opportunity, pricing was less than 1000myr/week for our stay.  O0

Location is here
[

We had a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom apartment on the 22nd floor with 180 degree views like these (our actual view at dusk)

and

Inside had this sort of style

Washing machine is through the folding door at kitchen bench end
4 burner gas cooktop to match oven and s/s exhaust fan is in this area also

There is a Sunshine supermarket attached
A few coffee shops/Kopitiam all with wifi
A department store of sorts, but Gama and Prangin mall are all close by as are a multitude of other restaurants in the area.

There is also a large (massive) pool area with 1 large and 2 smaller pools plus BBQ pits available if thats your thing, (we rarely saw more than 3 people use the pool at any one time)
Wi Fi and gym on floor 5
Security

Apartment itself was huge compared to a hotel room, with full sized fridge freezer, large LCD TV, Dining room table and chairs, stove, two burner gas cooktop (in alcove laundry area along with washing machine)
Queen sized bed in main bedroom, 2 large singles in other.
A/c was fine, cranked it for the first half a day and then left it on the lowest setting after the apartment had reached a suitable temp.
All towels, glasses, plates, sheets soap etc supplied, but as soap toiletpaper etc runs out, you buy yourself

There is no phone or internet in appartment (but mobile reception was fine, we used http://www.tunetalk.com/ very cheap and very reliable sold on Air Asia planes) and free wifi downstairs on floor 5 gym/pool area and also in most of the coffee shops attached to the complex.

Bathrooms are small compared to western standards, but more than adequate.

Internally, the apartment does have a few cracks in the walls as a lot of Asian places get, but after a day, we hardly noticed them and they certainly didn't detract from our stay.

TV had local channels only, but we had a laptop plus external usb driven speakers with a pile of movies on the hard drive for viewing.
The TV has a HDMI port so we could attach the laptop for the big screen thing and a HDMI cable was purchased at Gama for 30myr.

You have to take care of your own cleaning, but really, who needs the beds made and towels replaced every day?

All in all an excellent stay in a great location and prices were very comparable to our usual accommodation choices in GT and you cant go wrong for the price.

there is more information on the complex and additional pictures here http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=430442

Contact the lovely Peggy Khoo from Ivory Properties on peggyksk @ yahoo dot com for details.

Thanks Breathless! I will bookmark this one for future reference. It looks like a very cool place. And the price is excellent especially you can sleep for four.  ~44~

Another alternative is Century Bay Serviced Apartments down by Queensbay Mall. Its slightly more at between 4000rm to 4500rm per month depending on length of stay. For the money you get a 'detached' rooftop duplex penthouse with 3 beds, 3 baths, kitchen, living room with 40" full HD LCD, all the basic necessities, Blu-ray DVD, 2 x dining areas, your own large private garden with gazebo, trees, plants, dining chairs with views of jelatek island, the sea and penang bridge. Free Broadband, Astro, housekeeping, very large pool with bar etc.. Private allocated parking spaces with your name. You are even allowed to bring your dog!

Its not the most modern of places, more functional. The Penthouse is completely away from everyone else and it was a convenient place to explore from.

If you want to know more then call them and ask to speak to Justin (the Manager).

Had a private rental in Sri Sayang at Batu Ferringhi, so very much nicer than the ones the complex rents out.

http://www.rentalsystems.com/advert_summar...m=ownerweb&pr=1  (ED : This link does not connect, see below)

Pictures are very faithful to what we actually got, the booking process was easy and Susie the owner while not able to meet us had her son arrive and look after us.

Midway through our stay Susies sister came and did a clean up.

The complex itself is visually quite good, the lifts X 3 to the 16th floor are very fast, there is a secure carpark (@5myr/day) a restaurant (it's ok if to lazy to go out) and a minimart downstairs and a pool and tenniscourt. (Rasa Sayang pool and gardens over the road, was nicer and it seemed that they were happy for us to use their facilities when we walked through)

A bus arrives about every 30 minutes directly over the road from Sri Sayangs driveway under the streetlight (Rapid and Private Co.) and a trip to the gurney should cost around 1.50myr each though the private guys do try to charge more on occasion.

I followed that link to holidaylettings and surprised (though not that surprised**) to see a unit at the condo I am currently staying in advertised.  Our property agent said that short term lettings were definitely not allowed here  ::)  Do these rules ever get enforced I wonder?  And do short-term renters breaking the rules get kicked out on their holiday?

**I saw some happy holidaymakers the other day walking towards the condo I am staying in wearing just swimwear  :-\ and this is in a non-holiday neighbourhood away from beaches.  It wasn't a very pleasant sight, I can tell you.  Thankfully, I had already ate my lunch.
