Any New Suggestions for Medical Insurance?
« on: July 05, 2010, 06:56:46 PM »
I have been trying to arrange Basic Medical Insurance to comply with MM2H, but so far have no luck at all.
I have emailed the brokers/insurance companies mentioned here already without reply.

Would anyone have any further recommendations for me to try?

Many Thanks for any help.

Regards

Ken

Really depends on what you are looking for...... if you want something decent then could recommend Andy Blandford (andy.blandford@lighthouse.asia) at Lighthouse in KL, or the William Russel rep in KL, Bob Simpson, (bsimpson@infinsolutions.com).

I have been an expat for 30+ in a few countries, and after running the gauntlet of quite a few policies these two seem the pick of the bunch.

Personally, wouldn't touch any local policies, and as I found out when you approach my age and beyond (60+) these local policies are more expensive than the international ones. You need to be careful, because many companies (both local and international) have a cut off age for new policies.

Have you checked with Sihat Malaysia?  We found their policy to be very affordable.

@  PakMike Many thanks for you comments. Due to circumstances, I am looking for the most basic package that I can find to satisfy the MM2H requirements. However, I will follow up the links you provided.

@  Teak. Again very grateful for your help. I have requested further details from Sihat Malaysia, and await their reply.

Any further options very much appreciated.

hi,

When I was looking last year I pretty much reached a dead end for basic insurance with a policy premum of RM1000 or less. As I was just over 61 then I got hold of a reject letter and used that. Sometimes being a reject is not so bad. Of course it doesn't help if you really want insurance but if the insurance is part of the application then the waiver letter is a way to go.

You can obtain a reject letter on the basis of age, or previous medical conditions (dribbling helps   ^-^  ).

Hi Scott. Not very encouraging is it. I am just looking for the very basic to get me through the MM2H. Nothing more.

Any chance I could get disqualified at 58?? Will practice my dribbling if it helps!

Thanks for your input.

EDIT: Have been looking at the Allianz "Supershield" cheapy policy.  Anyone any experience of it being acceptable to MM2H?

Any insurance policy should be good as long as it covers you in Malaysia.
A local policy is by definition accepted  ;)

Otherwise, I agree with PakMike
I wouldn't touch local policies if you want to have a decent cover for long term.
International ones become quite competitive once you reach 55 - especially French ones.

Try contacting Trecia Chong at AON Insurance Services in Penang 04 226 1128. I was after the same thing a few months back. This lady took care of myself and wife. I think from memory it was less than 1000 RM for both of us, of course the price is age dependant. Walked in 1 day had the policy in my hand the next afternoon.

Hope this helps.

As stated by the other posts really depends on your age & what & how much cover you require but we used "Tokio Marine Insurans(Malaysia Berhad)" web site www.tokiomarine.com.my   They have plenty of agents around, our MM2H agent advised us to use them they were very quick & no hassle, remember it only to comply & for one year to get you covered, & then you have plenty to time to source others if you require.

Greetings - I arrived in Malaysia a week ago and have been focussing on essentials such as accommodation, Health Insurance (for MM2H), bank accounts, Internet etc.

I had / have an issue with Health Insurance too given that I turned 60 in Jan10

I think that issue is now resolved (fingers crossed) with a policy from AIA

PM me if you require more information

Cheers

Hello to all.

Very grateful for all the suggestions here.

I now have several avenues to explore, and am sure of finding something suitable thanks to all the help.

Progress so far is that on visiting Kurnia Office, I was told that I must have a medical report BEFORE submitting my application. They didnt seem to know if the standard MM2H medical form duly signed and stamped by a Clinic, would be suitable.

Will report more progress when I have it.

@MK. Thankyou for your input, but sorry I can not PM you as my post count is not high enough.

Regards to all.

Just a sobering note for those looking to take short cuts on insurance cover..... I have been an expat for more than 30 years and lived/worked in about 13 countries (some dangerous god-forsaken places included)....ALWAYS had the best expat cover money could buy, but in all of that time have never made a claim.

Around Chinese New Year 2010 I tripped on the steps of a restaurant, had a very nasty fall and cracked my head open which required a rush to Gleneagles hospital and surgery (about 20 stitches). Basically they required money on the knocker, there and then......luckily I had my expat medical insurance card and a call was made to the insurer. Without cover it would have required RM 5,000 on the spot. Since then have had to make monthly visits to a brain surgeon, which all adds up financially.

Not sure if this advises to waiver insurance (I have certainly paid out a lot over the years) or keep covered, but I was certainly glad to have that insurance behind me at that time.

On some of these cheaper policies one needs to read the fine print VERY carefully. A friend of mine was struck down with some internal problem, was rushed to hospital and the emergency department recommended immediate surgery (by this stage she was not fully conscious). The bill was quite high after  a week in IC. On contacting the insurance company before leaving the hospital she was surprised to learn that her company would not provide cover because they had not approved her admission in the first place. A bit difficult I think in an emergency situation and about to go under the knife.

Since hearing this story from my friend, I make sure my medical insurance emergency card is with me at all times.

I like these medical insurance cards.  You pay slightly more for the insurance policies with cards, but not outrageously so, and may get you out of real trouble in a situation where say you're on your own and unconscious.

Horses for courses.
For whatever reasons they have, the original posted wanted a basic insurance policy to satisfy the MM2H requirements, not a lecture on the downside of cheap policies! Even the most  expensive policy will have a downside.

kenandching,

My insurer accepted the MM2H medical form.

While it would be nice to have a comprehensive medical cover with Hospital Card etc, at the present time, it is more likely that I will have to settle for a very basic cover purely for MM2H purposes.

@ Rspec

Good to know that the MM2H form was acceptable at least for your insurance company. I will try that anyway. Thank you for your help.

Regards to all.
